Another beautiful day. Sunny 78 degrees on the island of Rhodes. We travel to Lindos half way down the island. To see the Acropolis were Paul spoke to the Greeks. A long climb to the top with a view to forever. Just outstanding. Back to the boat early to catch some sun by the pool.

I am going to upload a couple of pics from yesterday on Myconos to give you an idea of the beauty here.

Davo and Janet
Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece bluemesaThere's Medieval castles in Greece? Who knew! We stopped in Rhodes enroute from Fethiye to Santorini, and got to enjoy the day in Rhodes town before catching the overnight ferry out. Coming into the port, there's a great view of their old castle, and we spent a lot of the day inside the "old town", exploring the Knight's Quarter, along with all the tourist shops.
After ...

Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece kandiehartWhat a difference a day makes. This place is absolutely beautiful. There are still lots of walls and castles that have been here for thousands of years, but it is nice and clean and friendly. We walked into the walled city and saw heaps more shops with locally made things and also lots of touristy rubbish, but no-one was hassling us to buy and we could just wander around looking and not fighting people off ...
Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece stephgraeme... our day over it was time to catch our ferry to Athens. On our budget we chose the cheapest ticket available. Which means "Deck." But unfortunately for us what we didn't realise was that this means it is the only place on board were you can smoke. So the rest of the night with the lights on and us trying to get a nights sleep on our hard plastic benches, we breathed in the refreshing air of smoke. Shona has now got a smokers cough.

This is going to be a tough couple of days.

Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece nikkigoldsteinNext we were onto Rhodes, one of the most historically significant Greek Isles. We saw the medieval old town, the Acropolis (yes, Rhodes has one too), and the site where the Colossus of Rhodes presumably stood in ancient times. We also got in a little beach time and visited a neat pottery factory.
Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece melanieandjames... the ammunition of siege engines. It is difficult to imagine that equipment today could propel such large and heavy objects any distance let alone hundreds of years ago. Leaving the moat at the far end I moved up onto the other side to look at things from an attackers point of view. From here I could see that for much of its run it was double moated making possibility of access even more difficult. At each end of the moat there is a sign telling a little of the ...
Rhodes, Greece globalbedu... and lush green plants growing up walls that were built a thousand years ago. It is with regret that one walks past all this and asks the toothless old woman in the shop for a loaf of bread and a tin of white beans in tomato sauce. Still, you can't have it all.

We found a pension today with a couple of Internet computers in the foyer. Sitting amidst a rabble of diving instructors from the States, Britain and Australia who had started drinking on an early bender, we logged on ...
