    ... thunder storm that persisted until lunchtime, ensuring we stayed indoors and rested. We found "Psycho" in English on the tv and then in the afternoon those boys from Hazzard County - hilarious stuff!
    Our thoughts on La Spezia. The city itself is quite unremarkable and not terribly touristy but it is the gateway to the wonderful Cinque Terre, for which there are no words and we probably don't have a picture to do ...

    The Cinque Terre consists of 5 small towns that are joined by hiking trails all along the water, built into the mountain sides. The entire area is considered a national treasure, traffic free (but not tourist free)!! In feudal times these towns were watched over by castles as pirates in the 1400's were a problem. Vineyards are carved into the mountain sides and the economy was based on that and fishing until tourism took over. From where I am staying you can get to the Cinque ...

    ... more. It would have been an opportunity to see the other 2 regions of cinque terre. Even though the hiking oaths were closed due to too much rain, we were given time to explore the city. We looked in a few shops and eventually found a place that sold creeps! They were freshly made and I got Nutella on mine! After crepes we got back on the bus to the hotel. Supper was once again good.     ... so are lots of terraces with waterfalls and fountains everywhere together with amazing views. We had watched a documentary at home with Monty Don at home so were keen to see them. A huge villa which was built as a summer retreat overlooks the gardens. We spent a couple of very pleasant hours there.
