... but it wouldn't be us if we didn't get lost somewhere along the way. We wandered down to the beach which is grey sandy stuff and rocks, nothing like home beaches but still a beautiful outlook. Found a small alleyway and headed down and stumbled on the other side of the coast and a small inlet with a white sandy beach, how odd to have black rocks on one side of the coast and literally across the road white sandy beaches. ... subway, the next train was an hour away! It was now 3:30 and we thought it best to take the train all the way back to Rapallo (about an hour, stopping at every little station on the way). Arrived back at 5:00pm after stopping at the neighbouring Chiavari station for 15 mins (had to stick my head out of the train to ask someone who looked semi official if the train actually went to Rapallo (or if it had in fact reached the end of it's run)! ...

... through one by one. There was a lot of waiting, but finally I was waved through. I didn't see any accidents so maybe this was just the Italian way of generation more jobs?
I got to the end of the road and found out why. It was a dead end, but with the small village of Portofino there with it's harbour and huge yachts. There isn't much parking space, so they let one in if one leaves.

... lunch, except there was no menu! Just a waiter explaining the specials in Italian. We had him talk slower and we were able to use the little Italian we've learned in the last week to order lunch. Aqua Naturale (no frizzante), spaghetti bolognese (also for lunch was vegetable soup or fettucini in an olive pesto - I think), and cappuccino. We also understood when he asked if we wanted a second course, which we declined. ...

... like." We liked! We got the room (no breakfast) for 67 Euro ($98) - a saving of 15 Euros. It was rather warm, so we did have the windows open. But it was just traffic noise - no problem at all.

The medieval old city of Genoa is Europe's biggest - back in the 1300s it was one of the world's four largest cities. After checking in and getting rid of the luggage, we still had a couple of hours to explore. We walked passed some of the Rolli Palaces ...
