... city of Alba for one day of the every-weekend-in-October truffle festival. Dozens of street vendors lined the streets selling truffles, mushrooms, vegetables, spices, nuts, wine and sweets. The "truffle market" itself was held in a huge closed tent, with dozens of truffle vendors, and a "guarantee" judge where one took the purchased truffle to certify the quality and authenticity of said truffle. ... The hunter has to be quick or else the dog will eat the truffle. It was interesting to watch the dogs and hunter at work and we found 3 white truffles which have a strong garlic aroma. To be a truffle hunter you must be licenced by the govt and it takes a number of years to train the dogs. Back at the hunters home we tasted shaved white truffle on cheese. ... we returned to the Antica, catching up on email etc. The sun was dropping, enough people about to create atmosphere without being noisy, and the resident dog and geese were wandering about the lawn. Sigh of contentment! Soufflé of zucchini and fresh tomato, ricotta stuffed zucchini flowers, risotto with veal sausage and sauted fillet of sirloin for dinner at a tiny but classy local taverna.
