Click for my pictures of Athens David's pictures of Athens I have been trying to write this entry for a while now, but couldn't quite bring myself to do it. It was almost as if I felt that if I write it down it will somehow dissipate the surrealness of this trip, which remains part of the magic for me. This is a story of two best friends, on the vacation of a lifetime to Greece, in the middle of my third term at Oxford. It was a six-day long weekend, if you will. We began so early in the morn...
Athens, Greece bebraudSo we got the bus from Zakynthos Bus Station, where we got the last few seats on the bus. We had to wait a bit so walked into town and grabbed some munch. Our next destination after Athens was intended to be Istanbul, and then on the TV we see a few casual bombs going off in Istanbul... safe! We decide we are still going to go there if we can. After lunch we got the coach towards Athens. It was on the coach where we met "English ****" he couldnt find a seat number so just sloped into a random...
Athens, Attica, Greece neorockzMany a week ago, around about the final days of the Spanish chapter, the Rev and I mapped out a ridiculously long and potnentially very hazardous train pilgrimage from Athens to Thessaloniki, up through Bulgaria, by way of Belgrade, Serbia, before arriving - hopefully - in the gloriouus city of Budapest, Hungary. As i've mentioned earlier, mammoth train journeys always look more fun and wild on paper than in reality. I think it dawned on both our minds on the overnight ferry to Greece that th...
Paros, Greece thesaxman... a couple of the other guys on the tour to go out for dinner. We find a rooftop restaurant near our hotel with fantastic views of the Acropolis. My dish is “Rooster and Okra.” Fabulous!
After dinner we walk around the neighborhood, and see the new Acropolis Museum. Our rooftop deck at our hotel also has wonderful views, so we sit enjoying a truly unique sight under the light of a beautiful full moon.
... straight lines because of a series of optical illusions. For example, each column is narrower at the top and bottom and thickest through its middle. Additionally, the columns on each corner are slightly thicker than the others. The architect knew that with the sun and the elements of nature constantly beating on the corner columns, they would appear to be weaker if they were the same size as the others. The base of the Parthenon is not a ...
Athens, Attica, Greece lauren.warnecke... alleys. And of course, throughout my three days in Athens I met various people who accompanied me on some of my excursions. From the lonely French international business kid, apparently working alone in an Import/Export office for people he only spoke to on the phone. Spending his evenings in an overly crowded, dim hostel room without much knowledge of English doomed to wake every morning at 5:00 Am so he could catch the only bus to the firm; Getting by on beer, marijuana and ...
Athens, Greece yoniyahavYassas from Greece! Well after an epic travel day we finally made it to Greece. Lets just say it has been very interesting so far. Luckily we rented a car, which was proven to be invaluable since we are in the middle of nowhere. Our hotel/Club Med is located in a small beach town 40 mins outside of Athens. We are definitely among the locals! The language barrier has been quite crazy, but Tim is starting to get really good at reading Greek, but verbal communication ...
Athens/Marathon, Greece nickynite... go back' he says 'are you ready for an up hill push' I think he is joking me as I look at the hill he refers to. It's a sheer hill that is in the middle of the olive grove - you can just tell that its not a hill that anyone/or anything uses. So we bounce our bikes up this hill, only to get to the top to see that there is nothing there and we have to bounce our bikes back down the hill and back up the other side to be taken up another 'off-road' track again non ...
Paleohora, Greece amanda_odwin... Look at it, the place is packed with visitors!
The Acropolis is actually one of the 20 finalist of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Too bad it wasn't one of the winner, otherwise, I could have taken two items off the new 7 wonders to pay a visit to, hehe.
This is the Erectheum ...
As usual I don't even know where to start. I will updated briefly for now as I have to call Turkey and figure out how I am getting into India, story coming... 36 HOURS The total journey time from Rome to Athens was 36 hours and was pretty brutal. The 16 hours on the ferry turned out to be not so bad as we were allowed to sit inside in airplane style seats. Since it is off season there weren't a lot of people on the ...
