This morning we headed for Porto in Portugal. On the way we stopped at the little town of Celorico. We visited the Hotel Mira-Serra for morning tea. The guide purchased custard tarts for everyone. ... in Vide. We have cleared several of the overgrown steps, Ol has skimmed swathes of grass and bramble to make clearer pathways across each terrace. He has an very intrepid determination to uncover every corner of the 11 hectare plot, and slashes at what seem like impenetrable thickets with the long armed scythe, to uncover further water channels and grassy slopes. Coimbra- a lovely old Portugese city which is kept alive by the university established in 1290 up on top of the hill. Home to beautiful old buildings, architecture, gardens and views- you know how it goes in Europe. The rest of the city was quite funky too with new parks and restaurants along the river but you could tell the GFC hadn't been kind to the ol' girl. There were many abandoned old buildings (begging for us to do them up) and new apartment buildings left sitting ...

... except that in Porto, the buildings are not just for show. For me, Porto has more charm than Lisbon in some ways. As we got out of our hotel, we saw a stage with a series of cultural dancers wearing traditional rural clothing playing instruments. Then, we went to a church and saw huge displays of flowers with religious figures on top of them. Tina knew there would be a parade as she saw them on tv before and asked when it would be held. ...
