The Alps and Skiing on a Glacier!

After leaving Venice, we hopped on a train which took us to Innsbruck, Austria. This is in the Tirol area in the south western part of Austria. We stayed the night in Innsbruck, and made our way out to Kaunertal the next morning. Innsbruck was the first place that we were able to catch a glimpse of the Alps! These ones weren't snow covered, because they were not very tall. The closer to the glacier we got the more snow we saw! However, ...

Twice over Stelvio in one day

... Having taken loads of photos on the way down earlier I simply headed as fast as possible back up to the summit and without even stopping at Stelvio itself I started my decent down the magical East side pass.

If there was ever a miracle road then this must surly be it as this section of road has over 47 hairpin bends and is simply hung by concrete pillars and bridges right down the pass. How the brakes of any vehicle survive this decent I do not know as even with all ...

From Wikipedia, I've learned that Bolzano was recognized as the #1 city in Italy in 2010 for quality of life. In 2011, Bolzano came in second to Bologna. After visiting both of these cities, we understand why -- we loved them both.

From Bolzano, we drove back down Lake Garda and stayed at Sirmione, a little community ...

We both woke up feeling fairly average and as the visibility was low decided to do the dreaded laundry. What a palaver! It cost about €20 when it should have been a lot less as the instructions were confusing. After a long search for the best gelato in Bolzano- which was closed we settled for an early lunch and vino. Feeling better we tackled the oldest cable car in the world (1908) on the other side of Bolzano. The views ...

    It Still Feels Like Austria

We managed 88 kilometers today, mostly along old railroad grades along a river. We know we are in Italy, but it still feels like Austria. Most people greet us in German and Wiener Snitzel is easier to order than Tortellini. We finished the day in Appiano just southwest of Bolzano. At some point these Italians will begin speaking and eating Italian if ...
