... he wasn't too popular with the king Felipe II, but he did some awesome work. I also figured out how to make my powerpoint with vertical slides, so it'll help emphasize the proportions of his work. Lastly we saw the works of Velazquez, pretty much a prodigy of his time, being a royal artist at the age of 22, when most artists would die for such an honor and receive it in their later 60s if they were lucky. He didn't have ...

... moved on from our nescafe and croissant to the cafe down the street which serves churros y chocolat, a classic spanish breakfast - SO good! A particularly interesting aspect of many of the cafes here is that each menu item has 3 different prices depending on WHERE you eat it. It's cheapest to eat standing at the bar, more to sit down in the restaurant, and the most to eat outside on the terrace. We learned that ...

Day 2

... There is a different bus route for each one although they intersect in several spots. The historical section of Madrid reminds me very much of Rome. This is probably because much of the architecture was put there by the Romans when they ruled Spain. The Spanish are very proud of their artists, war heros and kings and queens (well, the ones that were not dictators). Every street seems to be named after one and there are beautiful sculptures all ...

Walking and walking but fun!!!

... couldn't get any tighter we walked off to see the Magic Fountains outside the Catalonian Museum of Art. The fountains turn on only at night and are accompanied with lights and music. We arrived during the very last show. I wanted to see it again so my aunt told me i could come the next evening. When I got home i dropped onto the bed. Tommorow is another adventure, hopefully not involving walking. :]

... at work, in bars, on the street... My otherwise-clean clothes smell of smoke :-( 2) Vegetarians have a very hard time finding decent fare in most restaurants. I figure that by the end of the trip, Radha will have a lost at least 20 pounds. 3) The subway is very clean, very efficient, and goes pretty much everywhere in the city. At 10 rides for 6.50 Euros (about $10), it's pretty cheap. 4) Internet access from hotels is not very efficient, and far from ...

... were structures built by the intelligent and meticulous Moors. Their Arab influence during a time when Europe was still struggling through medieval times gave Spain an educated advantage. It became a hub of universities and monasteries that attracted the intelligencia with a will to learn, from the far corners of Europe. Spain certainly reached a peak in power about the time they colonised parts of Central and South America. Their mastery of the seaways was legendary but as inevitably as ...

¡Hola a todos!

... for those opportunities for new friends to arise. I haven´t yet experienced the nightlife, also called La Marcha so more updates later as I become more acquianted with this new way of life. Breakfast is light, lunch at 2:30pm and dinner at 9pm (we actually eat earlier than most). I´m currently at school (free internet access than $3.75 per hour!!) right now and have two classes per day, split up MW and TR. We also have little trips/excursions on Fridays that sometimes are required.

The San Fermin Festival

... to escape the pack of bulls, which, still guided by the steers, streak straight across the arena to their pens on the opposite side. The door to the arena is then shut and now the entertainment really starts. Many of the runners that make it to the arena now form a kneeling vigil in front of the door to the bullpen. Apparently it is good luck in Spain to be touched by a bull's hoof as it jumps you. Presumably it is worse luck to have the 300-kilo animal bless the guy in front ...
