... We tasted our first local one at dinner Thursday night at the hotel’s quite nice restaurant. A Moussy, produced by the local cooperative. You can buy it from the hotel at 15 euro a bottle, which is a nice price for champagne and it is quite good.

Friday we headed off for Meaux, to check out another possible port. That was about a 60 km trip. We didn’t take the Autoroute for the first part, instead drove along the Route ...

There were 1, 2 or 4 horses pulling a cart with people on ...

... br> My host arranged for me to stay in la Mairie (town hall) of an even smaller village, Corbeil. They are well used to hosting pilgrims, for whom they provide a camp bed and sleeping bag in a room labeled 'Salle de Pelerins'. They knew roughly when to expect me and five minutes after I arrived a guy turned up with a basket containing my evening meal and breakfast for the next morning. There is a microwave and coffee machine in the room, ...

... bed at the hostel that previously had nothing down for me.

A word of high praise has to go out to volunteers at R(h)eims Cathedral and the Notre Dame church in Chalons -en- Champagne. They offer an invaluable bed-finding service to pilgrims passing through the two cities en route to Santiago del Compostela and to Rome.

My accommodation tonight is with another Pilgrim Host in a tiny village roughly 23kms south of ...
