... were able to view Zell from above and really appreciate how lovely and picturesque the whole valley is. It's hard to comprehend that the history of this area can be traced back to 2000BCE and parts of the town walls erected in 1229 can still be seen!. Zeller Schwarze Katz is a world famous wine and a monument in the shape of a black cat was made as a fountain and is located in the town square. Tomorrow we are planning a boat trip.

Well, we had a surprise yesterday when our home-stay hosts suggested we stay in Speyer an extra day. It seems the anticipated guests for the next weeks home-stay have faded away. We will have to be on a train out of Speyer no later than 12:00 noon. ...

Today is our 16th anniversary, pretty special to be in a castle in Germany to celebrate it. Makes up a bit for all the anniversaries in little country towns, quick trips to Maccas after a meeting for a McFlurry etc. We started the day by driving upstream to Traben - Trabach, a bigger town about 30mins away. Weren't sure what we would find, but as we drove into town what really stood out was a castle ...

... holds 222,000 liters of wine – it seems
that back in the days, they drank only wine and beer because the water was so
polluted. And, of course, they needed a
place to store the wine. And, by the
way, wine was often used by the farmers as their payment for taxes (so that
they would not be imprisoned for non-payment of taxes). Apparently, some of the wine was not very
good, but the prince(s) still drank it ...
