... onsen was calling me. I had loved them last time in Japan. I went in the indoor one first... nothing like a soak in mid forties water to sooth & relax. Then I went into the outdoor onsen. The cool wind above and piping hot water was so invigorating! I even sat outside the water to cool down a little (in 9 degrees in the nude). Very refreshing! So now it's time for bed - on our futon mattresses on tatami mat floors. Hope mums snoring doesn't keep me ...

Today we are travelled to Hakone by speed train. We had been saving our JR pass for the longer transits from Tokyo to Hakone and Hakone to Kyoto, only to find out that we could not use our JR pass all the way to Hakone, even though this was a little disappointing, we soon got over this frustration as the train fare was minimal and time difference only half an hour. The train trip we did have was very ...

Here the hot springs, erupting geysers and bubbling pools of boiling mud dominate a fascinating landscape. We take the Hakone rope way from Sounzan down to Togendai on lake Ashinoko. We take a boat journey around the lake which is a water filled volcanic crater with a circumference of 18K. We are now making our way to Tokyo by ...

Mount Fuji and Hakone are hiding

... of the mountain. Far earlier than planned we set off for Hakone and had some lunch before going up the Hakone sky gondola to the Owakudani Valley. Here we went for a walk up to where the geothermal activity was taking place so we could see the sulphur clouds hard boiling eggs and turning them black. It reminded me a lot of Rotorua in New Zealand. We descended back down the mountain on the coach ready to get on our pirate boat across Lake Ashi. From here you ...
