Eventually getting my **** back in to gear, I left Kasar Devi and flagged down a car heading back to Almora, the driver taking an interesting route, getting lost on the way. This would prove to be the shape of things to come today, as I attempted to get to Ramnagar, a town halfway between Almora and my next destination, Rishikesh. Hopping in to another jeep, I got in to Ranikhet, a small hill town which reminded me a lot of Darjeeling, except smaller and with a large military presence ...

It did get quieter around the southern side so we ambled along going over our India adventure, picking ...

... fittingly eating our favourite curry of the trip (kadai chicken) – feels weird that we’ve only got one more full day left in India. On the walk back to the hotel we met a very well spoken guy called Hasan Mumtaz who invited us to go to the Nainital boathouse club and even offered to sign us in as the temporary membership is pretty steep, alas we were stuffed but suggested we may meet him tomorrow ...

... to the hotel reception for the purpose. Off he went to top up our phone so we could resume our negotiations with the bank. It was an anxious moment when he returned with the news that the local phone shop was only authorised to top up by 100 rupees (about one pound). However this was enough to phone our bank at home and establish that the cards were all usableat ATMs throughout India – but how to use them if, despite the banks assertion, they ...
