... French skills to the test by calling a B&B which had its number in the window of the now closed tourist office. He is doing incredibly well as the woman on the other end of the phone spoke absolutely no English at all, but he managed to get us into a room (more like an apartment), for the night and we each had a bed which after the day on the road we were all grateful for, even though it was over our budget.

The weather was still cool and damp, but we still enjoyed the charm of this city 40 kms west of our house sit. It is situated at the entry to the Charente-Marais recreational area of swamps and canals, which we will explore later this month, but there were still some lovely bicycle trails along the river.
The Donjon fortress was as interesting for the ceramic exposition displayed there as it was for its own 11th C sake.

Week of February 26: All's Fair So, what to do when stuck in the middle of France for two weeks?… why visit all of the local markets and fairs of course! Friday we visited Melle, Saturday it was Chef Boutonne, and Sunday it was Rouillac. The first two were weekly markets, so were smallish and circled around the central square. ... Bushaltestelle direkt vor der Haustür ist so wie im guten alten Rellingen). Es war also schon dunkel, als ich auf dem Hof angekommen bin. Ich habe mich sehr gefreut, Johannes wieder zu sehen und er hat mir voller Stolz den Hof, die 20 Schafe und die 2 Kühe gezeigt. Ich habe einmal kurz gemolken, ein merkwürdiges Gefühl, und später dann Rohmilch getrunken (gar nicht so schlimm, wie du gesagt hast Mama, im Gegenteil!).
