Bitola -- a pleasant surprise!

... Before heading out for some exploration, Craig called to confirm the taxi ride reserved in advance for tomorrow. Valentina, a native of Bitola and an online embassador for Bitola tourism, had offered advice on contacting taxi drivers and a host of other helpful information.

The main street in Bitola is called Marshal Tito Street, a very walkable pedestrian friendly zone. Macedonia / Macedoine

A visit to Macedonia's second city

... 19th and early 20th century architecture, disturbed here and there by some truly tasteless 1960s behemoths. The north side of town is distinctly more Turkish in character, looked over by several mosques and centered around an old, yet still very much active bazaar. The suburbs and the industrial areas around the bus and train stations are considerably less attractive, but that seems to come with the territory, ex-Yugoslavia and all. I originally had it in mind to ...

In the lands of St. Clement

... musicians marching behind a family whose father was carrying a lamb to offer to the church. Again, not sure what the significance of the ritual was, but it certainly was interesting to watch. Overall, Ohrid is a pleasant place to while away, if not overwhelming in its historical attractions. It's a bit different than I expected and certainly not the architectural preserve I thought it might be. Somewhat more confusing is how few fellow backpackers and ...

Lake of Sharks

... Gospel of Jacob must have been a favourite here, for its stories adorn the walls. All these we learned from a Ph D candidate who was possibly also named Maria. Her real name has been lost in the synapses of my mind. She speaks English in a Slavic metre and very loudly. Perhaps it was the setting and the echo of the walls, or the air may have been too fresh to properly conduct sound, but whatever it was some of the story was heard only by the walls. Sveti Maria's church was ...

A Monk and his 4 x 4 Lada

... he was not officially a monk yet, but an Orthodox version of an acolyte. His outfit was a black hat and a long black robe that reached his feet. His beard has grown down to his chest. To officially become a monk, he said it could take him 10 years. He's working at being a monk. Or something like one. Normally, that is a life of solitude, obedience, worship and labour. It's become harder with to the number of tourists that the monastery has this year. Karlist has ...

Beautiful Lake Ohrid

... but if we went with these two boys in the army, it would only be 1 K. We went with them. They took us through an army base. We had armed escorts !!!!! It was so quick. I don't even think that it was a K. And then there it was. The border gate was calling us. So we made our way over and was stamped out of the country Now, if you ever see a 1997 Lonely Planet Eastern Europe on a shoestring trying to find its original owners, you will know that is ours, and could you please return it safely
