... like a ski lift) up the hill to the Germania monument, built in 1871 for the reunification of Germany then walked the 5kms down the hill. Had a drink, then went shopping & back to the boat for lunch.

The next part of he Rhine is known for its castles, they were amazing, the cloud then started to move in so went inside for coffee & cake, like we needed more food.

Got a haircut, really impressed & only €18.

... over to Wash World and did laundry. Getting bad weather news from Wacken. They are experiencing quite a bit of rain. We went from 40 degree heat and no rain to 20 degrees and lots of rain! On the ICE train to Hamburg now and then a few more trains to Bad Bramstedt. WACKEN STARTS TOMORROW!!!!! ...

... man made canal, there are a stack of locks to pass through as the water height needs to be raised to meet up with the Danube. We have passed through about 14 locks so far, but i understand it will be 68 in total..

The process is fascinating at the moment but i reckon we will lose interest in the near future.

Mainz was more of a stopping off point. Only one day here. Insight tours arranged a buffet dinner for us at the hotel which was a nice surprise. It was definitely one of the nicest dinners with a very nice spread of delicious foods. We did get a walking tour of the cities historical center in the morning before we left. There is not a lot in the way of historical buildings here except in the very center, due to the massive bombing which destroyed over 85% of ...

With time running out, there was only a quick chance to take a look at the massive cathedral from the Marktplatz. We tried taking a look inside, but they had a concert organised and there was a mass of people out the front buying tickets. So instead we walked back to the Hauptbahnhof via the other popular church in Mainz: St Peters. We had a little bit of time to take a look around the shops ...
