So after two very messy hours in the kitchen, I had a lemon meringue pie with a crust that was too thick and buttery (the substitution for shortening is butter, but 25% more of it), and a meringue topping that was too flat. I was never good at making crusts. I also had to hand-whip the meringue since we don't have a mixer. Brandon's tells me it was good, but I think he is just being nice because of the blood sweat and tears that went into it. He's a good husband...

We started our day with a guided tour of Mainz. This is the home of modern printing as Gutenberg first set up shop here. The city was largely destroyed after WWII, but has been rebuilt and is quite beautiful. We toured the Gutenberg Museum and saw a few examples of his original bible.
