    The monastic community of Melk is more than 900 years old and black robed Benedictine monks still stroll amid the marble sculptures and frescoed walls. It is also a prestigious monastery school with around 900 students. It is a day school from elementary through high school drawing on the surrounding countryside for it's student population.

    25th August. Following on from Richie's brief detail on our last stop at a supermarket in Slovenia, we arrived in Austria mid afternoon. We stopped just outside the old border crossing to find a magnet for me and purchase another Vignette to allow us to drive on the motorway. The Vignette I have to say are pretty good Idea. It cost 15 euro in Slovenia and had the equivalent of toll booths at the on and off ramps but no que, the sticker is picked up by camera and you just ...

    ... countryside towards Vienna. One heart stopping moment when we nearly came bumper to bumper with a car overtaking at speed round a blind corner. Paul braked hard and aimed for the roadside, the truck being overtaken did the same, and the other driver accelerated hard and sailed through.

    ... We were exposed, but the wind had an icy nip to it. Fortuitously, Paul had been given some peach schnapps to drink at the top of the mountain, so we did. Warming from the inside out! Still kept our hands in our pockets though.



    Our walk looped back past Offnerhutte where a new bunch of walkers were being entertained by a singer with an accordian. All very tyrolean.
