We think we'll probably never come back here, so we decide to spend a day taking it all in, and resting tired muscles. The breakfast buffet is varied, and includes large bowls of home-made yoghurt and ricotta da pecore. After breakfast we walk uphill out of the village and we are overtaken by a number of vans bumping along with cargoes of hang gliders and para gliders. When we get to the launch point they are ...

... bowl down to the plain and make the final ascent to the village. The agriturismo Antica Cascina Brandimarte is high up at the other end of town. It's all I can do to keep the bike upright, and Helen walks. Agriturismo means farm stay, and Cascina means farmhouse. Since all the lentil farmers live in the village, this may have once been a farmhouse, but now it gives the impression it is an upmarket hotel and restaurant. I have read that ...

As we descend into the valley we see beautiful mediaeval villages on the opposite slopes, notably Vallo Di Nera where I had had thoughts of us staying if the residue of the flu was causing us grief. In the event we feel good and decide to go on to Visso, rather than the alternative, Norcia. The ...

We awaken to a beautiful day, and after breakfast we retrieve the bikes from the magazzino, and make some final adjustments. I find I can tighten a few spokes in my rear wheel trueing it somewhat, to stop it scraping the brake pads. We bowl along across the Valle Umbria, monster hills with bare summits on either side. The town of Trevi spills down the slopes on the right. The road begins to wind as we climb the ridge ...

Temporali and heavy rain most of the night, and it's hot and muggy. We waken far too early. Hotel Dei Duchi's breakfast buffet is splendid, packet cereals, but excellent preserved fruits, savoury cuts, cheeses and cornettos, so we eat too much. We go for wander under dark grey clouds. First we investigate the Percorso pedonale (underground moving walkway) which is reached by lifts across the road from ...
