Traveling from Chamonix to Lake Annecy we went through some breathtaking views through the Alps. The city is quite gorgeous, a favorite Lakeside destination for French families in summer. Technically we should be in Guillestre this evening, but the nearest accommodation we could book is just up the road from there, in a small village called Risoul. No cycling today!
We've looked back on some trips we've done in the past and thought it would've been nice to spend more than a single evening in one place, so for this trip we planned a day off.
Paul Henderson in his 'Cycling the French Alps' book recommends Briançon as a good place to spend a day off the bike, so we took his advice.

... to get a lot colder nearer the top, and we had to get our jackets on while we were still climbing. About 1 km from the top, cars have an option to take a tunnel through the mountain rather than going over the pass - it's not an option for bikes! That final ascent is really hard, especially in the rain. The gradient increases and, well, we were pretty tired by then.
