Just about 3 hours outside of Tokyo, we found our idyllic escape. The guidebook description alone was mouth-watering.

Hakone is a region popular among Tokyites (is this a word? If not, it should be) looking to escape the rat race for a day or more. Well up into the mountains, it boasts clean crisp air, lush forests, and a gorgeous alpine lake. Just what we were looking for.

We set off early today to catch the train to Hakone.

It's nice to get out of the city and see some of the countryside.

We dropped our bags off at the hotel and had a look around the town. Then did what they call the Hakone round trip.

Caught the bus to Moto-hakone-ko

... a couple towns and down an ancient Cedar pathway, then did the entire trip in reverse. Glad we did it but wouldn't do it again - it was a bit too touristy and too much work. It was also too cloudy to see Mt Fuji. Tonight we had a shabu-shabu dinner, basically steak and vegetable fondue, which you cook and then dip in one of two sauces. We had an excellent bottle of sake, recommended by our room attendant Taka. After a day ...

True story.

I was originally planning on limiting my vacation to Tokyo/Kyoto area, but hearing/reading a lot about Hakone convinced me to add it in at the last minute.

I'm here for 2 nights, but unfortunately I'm already regretting this - I wish I could stay here for a few weeks instead.

It would make for a very different kind of vacation, and one that I had not really considered. I wanted to come to Japan ...
