... name for their new town, decided to call it after the first animal they saw on their hunt- which was a bear, hence the name Bern (bear in German). They were lucky they didn't come across the Pink Fairy Armadillo...that could have been embarrassing.

The city has a great layout with old cobblestone roads and arcades stretching down both sides of many streets providing shelter to shoppers, which was great if it happened to shower today. There are also lots of trams ...

Today, though, was all about the Alps. We met down in Neuchâtel at 8am and boarded our bus for the 90 minute ride to the Alps. The scenery, as usual in Switzerland, was great throughout the trip but as we got closer to our final destination the Alps grew larger and more imposing.

    ... hour.

Afterwards we leisurely strolled leisurely along the main road and enjoyed the various fountains on our way to the Bear Pit. The pit which was first mentioned around 1513 has been completely renovated two years ago and is currently holding four bears. Legend has it that the Duke of Zähringen told his men in 1911 that the first animal they hunted will be the name giver and symbol of the city and guess what, ...
