We are on the road heading south, the Austrian autobahn goes through the alps, with 3km long tunnels and spectacular views.     ... scrolling we decided to bite the bullet and head to some lakes about 40k outside of Salzburg. We left Vienna around 10.30 and I my comment on the motorway being scenic is not quite true, not when travelling North West anyway. The rain didn't help and the majority of the 180km I drove was pretty much farm land with very little view of towns.     Soon the rafts start to arrive, the paddlers laughing and shrieking as the fast river rushes them downstream. Just upriver from the footbridge there is a landing place where the rafters beach their craft and climb up to a jumping platform for a high plunge into the river.

    ... The local brass band has turned up to play an impromptu concert. As we approach we can see that they are wearing swimming attire and as we watch (and I get the iPad video running, they march into the water and shuffle round a fountain in the shallows, all the while playing their instruments.

    as a finale they lay down the brass and go leaping into the water from the jetty. You couldn't make it up.

    what a great life we are living. ...

    The heavens have opened! It is our final night in Austria and we are having a meal with the lovely Christoph! He bought us all Jagermeister - bleugh :)!!

    Sad to be going home tomorrow but it has been an amazing journey and I loved every minute.
