A Surprise Visit

... seen anything like that - and then gave him a round of applause when his head (safely) broke the surface. I was a little indignant that I did not get the same reaction going off of the 6-foot rope swing.

After goodbyes all around, we headed back to town to watch the amazing sunset from our terrace, batido in hand. Batidos are milkshakes made with fresh fruit - in this case, papaya - and they're the perfect antidote to a steamy tropical evening.

Fancy-Pants on the Cheap

... stoop in the evenings. Once the sun sets, it's all about watching people go by. On our walk, many of the homes were lit by kerosene lanterns. Electricity is very unreliable here, so we weren't sure if the power was out in those homes, or if they have some sort of rationing system. Many of the kerosene-lit homes clearly had electricity (fridges and TV's, for example) but were also set up to function without it.

Happy Easter!

... be a little slower than normal just because of the holidays, but, in general, my projects are doing well. My current projects consister of: 1) Teaching English classes to adults and those classes are very fun two nights a week. 2) The Escojo group, a health/family planning group for youth, is moving along. I am interested in seeing what kinds of projects we get into next. The students ...

First trip to the beach - Samaná Peninsula

... bought us special Dominican coconut bread on the way. Whale-watching was a 5 hour endeavor...quite fun but I think I'm covered on whale-watching for the next 20 years. The boat was soooo rocky and several people were getting sick. It wasnt helped by the fact that the crew started playing a recording of a male whale singing...because that in itself resembles the sound of vomiting. Thankfully, i am not ...

... with me and will try to have patience with the ¨new me¨. I feel that in addition to my bad habits and cultural inequities I will have when I go back, I will have a lot to offer....I have a lot more patience when things don´t go my way, I can converse with people who speak spanish and do your spanish homework for you! I can sew a rip in any pair of pants, tell you home remedies to get rid of whatever ails you, and also cook up some delicious ...

Relaxing on the Atlantic Coast

... in town where more people could appreciate and consume their work. One afternoon after being punished once again by the blaring sun I found myself in the humidor room of one of the French boutiques. The owner happened to be inside while I investigated the manifold cigars for sale, pretending to know much more than I do, for while I smoked plenty of good cigars in Cuba (and have sampled many nice stogies from the DR), I don't really care ...

Cell Phone Hostages and Angels

... Skim-Ice guy (who by this time had introduced himself as "Angel," no joke) couldn't stop apologizing for the rudeness of the kid who charged me to get my own phone back. He gave Tilden and I both free Skim-Ices (and wouldn't let us pay!) and then found the right gua-gua for us and secretly paid for us to get back to class! My Angel! Ok, that's the end of my story but the moral is: there are some amazingly good-hearted people in the world mixed in with ...

Basketball Tournament

... continued until about 1 when we finally finished the tournament. In reflection, Randy and I both agreed that almost nothing went as planned, and yet somehow everything worked out. Our refreshments and music eventually showed up, everyone got to play, no major arguments or fights erupted and both participants and spectators had a good time. Even our internship supervisors from La Fundacion Maximo Gomez commented on how well it went. Apparently ...

In the Midst of the Christmas Season

... that not to mention have to fix some holes in the roof before the raining season comes. It keeps me occupied and that is very beneficial for me. It not that I do not like doing nothing, but I need time to adapt to this life. On the 30 of Dec., I headed out to join up with volunteers in Cabarete. It is in the North on the coast and is the Kite-surfing and Wind-surfing capital here. I was catching a cheap ride up. It was about 120 pesos to Santiago where we spent the ...
