Arrival

The landing at Barcelona was probably the smoothest I have ever experienced.

Once
we had collected our bag we looked for the railway station which is not
brilliantly sign posted from outside the terminal - we came out at B
and you need to head towards A (or left). Its quite a long walk to the
station - about 10 minutes …

... who have been here had recommended we visit Park Guell and Sagrada Familia, both Antonio Gaudi projects. Yesterday we went to Park Guell and, even though the line-up to get into Sagrada Familia was as bad as what we had experienced in Rome when we went to the Vatican, we didn't want to miss the opportunity to see this incredible work-in-progress. We got to Sagrada Familia at about 10:00 am and the line-up of people waiting to buy tickets was very long. We ...

... and super comfortable. Monday afternoon we wandered along Las Ramblas to the port (Robyn clutching bag to chest) admiring the architecture and sights along the way and stopping to eat paella and drink sangria and wine ( Robyn with bag entwined around legs). Not a mugger or scammer in sight. Tuesday 10 June: to pander to Robyn's fears, Robert had pre-booked a whole day tour plus evenings entertainment. This turned out to be absolutely fantastic! We retrace our path, furnicular and metro back to Placa Cataluyna. After wandering about at 3:30 we stumble vaguely (being hungry!) into a Main Street tapas bar and chose from a sushi style menu, designer tapas. Okay food, great location, attendants with radio linked ordering systems, ...

... for the better seats. However, when we were seated there were two problems. We were sharing a booth with a couple who was openly necking and kissing. But the worst part was that we were sat under an overhang and it was obvious even then that we would see the gymnastics taking place high up in the theater. We told the server that we wanted to upgrade our seats and they were very accommodating. The seating was tight, but we had very friendly ...

Clean and elegant hotel in a good location

We found this hotel from the internet and we liked the modern furnish and we had a room with a little balcony. Our room was on the 2nd floor but the windows kept out the noise,

    Downside
    - Service could have been better. We came in the morning and told we could check in at 2pm. When we were there at 2,30pm, we had to wait almost an hour. There was this other guest that came after us and got their room immediately. When we reminded them that we were waiting, the then proceeded to give us our room
    - Internet connectivity wasn't very good. We had no access 60% of the time we wanted to

Checked in with minimal fuss, didn't take the breakfast option at 18 Euros each! Top floor room - well laid out, good standard, clean, plenty of space, lighting could have been a little better. No noise disturbance throughout stay. Did use the bar most evenings - very generous measures! Staff on recepetion very helpful and no problems leaving our bags on the last day. All in all very comfortable and the location was ideal for exploring the city being so central and close to the tour bus routes, metro (Diagonal) and mainline railway to the airport (Passeig de Gracia). If you like a bit of comfort and security then would highly recommend.

    Great for a short break

    from

We had a 3 day long-weekend break in January

    Very noisy hotel

    from

We have just returned from 3 nights stay in the Alexandra Hotel. Location was great, close to all the sights we wished to visit and close to lots of good restaurants. Our rate included breakfast which was perfectly adequate - good choice of meats/cheese and fresh fruit. Staff helpful and friendly. Do not however come to this hotel expecting to sleep as not only is the hotel right on a busy road but more importantly it is completely lacking in any soundproofing whatsoever - you can hear everything in the room next door and know everytime someone in the room above or either side of you uses the bathroom and the plumbing is NOT quiet.

    Great hotel!

    from

Spent a great four days at this hotel. When I booked it I asked for a large double room if they had one, instead of a small double room, when we got there they told us that all of the standard doubles were fully booked so would we mind having a suite at no extra cost!! It was fab - we had a beautiful room, large terrace, double sinks and to top it all off, a jacuzzi!! The staff were really friendly and helpful and the hotel was in a good location for all the sights.

I didn't find the road noisy but the lift was going all night and I heard that which did keep me awake.

    Good location but noisy

    from

Chose the Alexandra for its location (close to most of the Gaudi things but away from backpacker scene). Had hoped this would make the stay a bit quieter but hotel on busy road so traffic noise all through the night. Also allocated room next to lift (which was really noisy).

Room inself OK - clean and tidy (though single beds pushed together so no exactly my idea of a double room!!).

Never tried the food there but lounge upstairs VERY smoky.

    Business like, not family orientated

    from

The location was very good, being walking distance from just about anywhere. The surrounding area is very posh and safe, kinda like the Oxford Street of Barcelona. The room was very spacious and clean, with wooden flooring and nice furniture. BUT the matress was very hard and we woke up every morning with back pain. The bathroom was nice and big and clean.

    Great Location

    from

Great location for shopping, dining and access to tourist attractions and the tourist bus service. Facilities were clean and well maintained. Expensive and not very good breakfast. Some of the staff were not very pleasant but better than the hotel staff in Madrid.

Comfortable and well located but noisy

    from

We enjoyed our week at the Alexandra Hotel, which is very well located in the Eixample district, close to two of the main Gaudi buildings. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Placa Catalunya, the main square just above the Old Town, and not much further (in another direction) to the Sagrada Familia. There are plenty of good shops and restaurants in the immediate area.

    Good place

    from

Overall, the Alexandra Hotel was a good place to stay. It's in a safe location that is a short and convenient walk to many of the Modernist buildings and a subway station. Hotel staff were helpful. The room was clean and adequate in size. Internet access in the lobby. Many restaurants and shops nearby (avoid one called Tapas, Tapas, however, where the waitstaff is exceptionally rude to everybody). I would recommend this hotel and return on a future trip to Barcelona.

    Decent, but nothing special

    from

Location is fine but not exceptional -- a ten to fifteen minute walk from the Ramblas and the Barri Gothic. The neighborhood seems exceptionally safe, consisting of a upper-class shopping district. The staff was friendly. Despite what some tourbooks say about spacious rooms, the one we received was pretty darn small. The room itself was OK, but nothing to write home about. Noise from the street below was noticable during the evening, but got quiet at night.

    Fabulous location, but---

    from

Barcelona is a very expensive hotel city. We needed to find a hotel quickly and ended up at the Alexandra. It is located in the heart of the Eixample district which is where all of the Gaudi buildings and other Modernista architecture is located. It is a quiet, upscale location with lots of cafes with outdoor dining. The rooms were just okay, with soft mattresses and worn, and soiled carpeting. Despite this, the rooms were clean, and we slept well. The lobby is small and not fabulous. And some of the staff were not friendly or helpful. If breakfast is not part of your plan, it is very expensive, but there a lots of cafes for a nice breakfast very close to the hotel. The location could not be better for walking to sites near the Ramblas and in the Eixample. There are hotels on almost every corner of the Eixample so shop around.
