Woke in our very Mexican style hotel to a continental breakfast. Not sure which part was continental but we feasted on bread as had no appetite for food last night after a long bus journey here. Met our tour bus to the air field at 8am. Once there the choice was to split up onto 2 different cesnar planes or to wait an hour for another plane. As we had the whole day to ourselves we decided to wait. This was a massive mistake as 2 and an half hours later we were still waiting on wicker seats. A...
Nazca is the home to the Nazca Lines. These lines drawn in the desert were only discovered 50 years ago and have baffled many leading Archeologists the world over. We arrived at 5.30am from Arequipa and headed to our hotel called Hotel Alegria (where we'd booked the flight from but not to stay as Nazca is a bit of a dump) to have brekkie. Our flight over the lines was booked for 7.30am, so we had time to relax after the journey and eat a horrible breakfast. We were collected at 7.00am and whi...
Nasca, Nasca, Peru carolloThe bus ride down to Pisco port showed more of the destruction caused by the 2007 earthquake. The population of the town is apparently 1500, but the number of buildings seemed to far outnumber this total. Apparently this is because many people moved out of the town after the earthquake. We joined a tour to Ballestas Islands (15USD) and jumped into a tourist boat with life jackets with broken zips. The water was very clam in the harbour and a fog hung low creating a feeling of mystery. The fir...
Nasca, Peru danasvAfter a leisurely lie in and finally feeling human again after a couple of days recovering at sea level we decided that we should climb the sand dune behind our hotel in order to get a great photo of the oasis. About a third of the way up GT gave up so it was left to me to get to the top to get our photo. The Inca Trail seems a breeze now after climbing a sand dune and in fact this would have been great training for the trail. Sweating and with sand in every imaginable orifice I managed to ge...
Nasca, Peru gareth.alannaArrived here in Nasca at about 4:00am in the morning. They were half asleep on the bus and almost didn't let us off the bus. Hotel Alegria were kind enough to let us take the room before check-in and pay for only one nights accomodation. It was a nice hotel though a little pricey for our budget so we checked out the following day and went and stayed at Friends House hostel, a cool and cheap place though the lack of water and no showers had us packing as soon as we could. On the Monday morning...
Nasca, Peru jamespiHiya everyone! Sorry this entry is so late, i have been doing a lot recently and have not had much internet access. Nasca is a small desert town on the coast, south of Pisco, which is the home of the ancient and mysterious Nazca Lines. These are huge figures which were drawn into the sand of the desert, depicting mainly animals, the most famous of which are the ´astronaut´, condor, hummingbird, spider, dog, whale, hands (or frog) and monkey. There are a number of other major ones, and hundred...
Nasca, Peru jaredstoughtonWe got the cheap Flores bus which actually turned out to be pretty good. No toilet for the 10 hour trip but 3 films, in Spanish but with English subtitles. Got to Nazca quite late and were a little perturbed by the lack of taxis at the bus terminal. Decided our best and only option was to wander about a bit, look lost and hope to stumble upon Hotel Alegria, where we had a booking. Looking lost we were soon helped by a kindly Peruvian man who pointed us in the right direction. First impres...
Nazca, Peru mothmanMy bus arrived in Nazca at 4:30 in the morning so I checked straight into the Hotel Alegria for some more sleep. After getting up I went to explore Nazca and to book my tour of the lines. For me, the famous Nazca lines were one of the things I'd most wanted to see in the whole of South America. These enormous shapes and animal pictures drawn into the desert 2000 years ago are still a mystery to archaeologists. The shapes are so large that apparently they can't be seen from ground level and we...
Nazca, Peru mrjoe... recommendations of any kind, and helped me finally figure out how to buy and use an international phone card. Anyone you know going to Lima on a budget should check this place out (25.00 a night for 2 people incl breakfast, private bathroom, free internet, hot water, cable, and linens.) We´re off to do a little more sight-seeing, I´ll try to post some pictures soon (this old computer doesn´t seem to have a USB port) Kate and Nath
