27th Jan ... A very bad start to the day - one of our NZ ladies had a stroke and is now in hospital in Punta Arenas. Her friend had to stay behind with her at the hospital, along with our tour leader. The remaining two of us took the bus to Puerto Natales - a four-hour journey. This is a big sheep rearing area - we also saw guanacos (like small llamas) and nandues (small ostriches) on the way. This place is the starting point for trips to Torres del Paine Nat Park and the ´W´ trip we are abou...

... pacific for about 12 hrs. I wont go into details, but trying to sleep through 5 to 6 meter swells with, what we have later deduced to be a bit of food poisoning (see footnote 1) is not an experience either of us wishes to repeat.
The following day we were back into the channels, and also the most beautiful scenery of the 3 day voyage. Sadly, we were both still poorly. Becs had to spend most of the rest of the trip in bed and although ...
... hike sucked and we were exhausted but finally we got to put our bags down and set up camp. Then we hiked another hour up rocks to see the Torres. Amazing! It was amazing how the clouds disappeared and we were able to see everything perfectly. It was beautiful how the water looked like a blue I had never seen water before. You had to climb down in to this valley of rocks to go near the water and once you did it was another world. The two other people ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile snowsteph2I left El Calafate and crossed into Chile yet again, this time across large expanses of dry brown-yellow plains, with low, but snow capped mountains dotted around. Being now a ¨professional¨ backpacker, I had been smart enough to put my bag into the luggage compartment of the bus last, so I was first to get my bag when we arrived in Puerto Natales in Chile, also I had memorised the layout of the town so I could walk straight to the ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile constantinople... of the coastline. The following morning we were awoken by an announcement that we had reached the glacier Pio XI, the biggest glacier in South America. Everyone rushed out on deck as the ship got as close to the 100m high glacier face as safely possible. It was an impressive sight. The shoreline continued to be impressive all the way to Puerto Natales and the weather was kind enough to allow sitting on deck in the sunshine, although I have to point out it was still very cold. The boat ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile littlemisbakpak... made friends with a Swedish couple who had been hiking the same route as us, and who had shared our room in the hostel in Puerto Natales before hitting the trail. Day three wasn't much easier, with 25 km to the last highlight of the so-called "W" route: Grey Glaciar. We camped on a beach and watched the icebergs float by as we made our dinner, and were amazed by the enormous glacier only a few minutes' walk away. After a short mid-day ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile alyssachris... The thing is, welding aluminum, which is what the radiator is made or, requires different equipment than welding steel, and my hunch is the last guy didn't realize it was aluminum until later, then did a ********** job with glue. Herman didn't have aluminum welding stuff. We tried a different epoxy which didn't work, and then I went into my own toolkit and pulled out something that might: a stick of putty-looking stuff called JB Weld. I had ...

Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile jhoekstra79... with the Italian guy at all, either did he with me. We had a cabin with bunk beds, without windows and the moment he walked into the cabin he complained. However the journey through the Channels surrounded by snow cap mountains was brilliant. I spent most of my time on the bridge which was interesting and I learnt plenty about mapping and using the radars etc. It was however late on the 2nd day that we sailed our way through to the pacific ocean and this is where the fun ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile malteaser... that we'd had the night before entering the park, despite being a stickler for
Appropriately I ordered the "W" pizza, then we shared a "pizzastrudle", which was a sweet pizza with sliced apples, nuts and ice cream! It was absolutely lush-o-rama...
Katie will LOVE ...
