Monarca Mariposa

We left Mexico city on the 9th of April and navigated the Metro to one of the bus terminals and found a first class bus to Zitacuaro which was leaving in 5 minutes (timing!) so we got on and watched Journey to the centre of the earth in spanish which was surprisingly entertaining. From Zitacuaro we found a local bus (also leaving in 5minutes) to Angangueo the closest little town to El Rosario Sanctuary. The local bus took about an hour and picked up every stray person along the way as we have...

Chickens in Church?

... The kids even take turns watching the younger kids. For dinner we had fresh tortillas filled with shell pasta and homemade cheese. Yummy, but didnīt quite seem as local as I had hoped. After dinner they walked me to my posada (hostel) which was awful. It looked like a prision cell -- cement walls and no window. Well, it was the only place in town and the family didnīt have room for me in their house. Although I couldnīt ...

... prohibited and you can be thrown in (their local) jail for doing so. And apparently these jails are much worse than the likes of those in Oaxaca! The introduction of Coca Cola and Pepsi has had a marked impact on Chamula - the introduction of these products at heavily reduced prices has resulted in the infiltration of religious practice, economic control and day to day life here. Local buildings everywhere bear the ...

... relentlessly for. We went to a show at the theatre in the evening called Palenque Rojo which reenacted a Maya story of a King being kidnapped. It was great, the actors were all in proper Mayan costume with massive headdresses and weapons, jumping around and fighting. We sat in the cheap seats at the back but could see Francisco moving about between empty seats in front being stupidly fussy as usual. Most ...

... a little cooked rice. Just heat and that’s all that’s to it – if you are not demanding.

As I write this blog in the Victoria (British Columbia) Public Library my mouth is starting to water and when I go home I know exactly what I will have for supper tonight. Barbara is still working in Prince George, BC until Friday (Sept. 4, 2009) so the simplicity of my meal is no problem at all.

So keeping that in mind it is now 17:42 and ...

Merida & the Maya

Another blog from a still-cold San Cristobal. My trip seems to be going in circles, ghehehe. Instead that this time Iīm not going to Central Mexico but to Guatemala, more specifically Lago Atitlan. This lake is described by some as the most beautiful lake in the world. Funny, Iīd originally planned to be at lake Titicaca at the Peru/Bolivian border for the New Yearīs, but now I might be at an even better place I didnīt even know about beforehand! My time in ...

There is beautiful snorkelling around the island and amazing beaches, but under the rain, it all appears very grey. It did not prevent me from renting a motorbike to drive around the island, but it prevented me from enjoying the beautiful views which were greyed out by the ...
