Sasha, on the plane from Dubai to Phuket:
We decided to break our journey to Phuket with a stop over in Dubai...because we have time! Had a really good flight on Airbus A380 - love that plane. Passport control was super slow but it actually didn't matter because we still waited ages for luggage. Eventually got into a taxi around 9pm. Taxi's are …
As far as 14 hour flights go this one was fine. Not that I have any prior experience in 14 hour flights. Got about an hour in Dubai before heading off to Munich on another A380. For reasons I am not about to question been upgraded to first class for that 6.5 hour ...
We're on our way home.
We said our farewells to the S class Mercedes after touring 2200 km in 14 days and heard from Gwynney one last time as she told us the way to the airport. And no we never did work out how to change the radio station.
We also made one last contribution to the European tolls paying 1,60 Euros and travelled through our last European tunnel for awhile.
... quite loudly - perhaps a ploy so the driver didnt have to talk to tourists)
* walked the corridors of the largest Mall (in perhaps the world) looking at shop after shop of fine food and clothing
* craned our nexks to watch all the fish in the huge aquarium at "The Mall"
* ate the most amazing lunch (at about 4pm - still a bit screwy from the air travel methinks)
* watched the Dancing Fountains and thought ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Al Manzil Hotel Dubai
Disappointed, but perhaps things will improve...
I was a single woman traveler on an overnight weekend stay at the hotel. I took advantage of a 450 dirham discount rate offered on the hotel's website. The comments of the other reviewers about the hotel being isolated in the middle of a construction zone are true! One big disadvantage is that few local taxis are in the area, which may mean you have to rely on the more expensive private taxi service provided by the hotel to go anywhere other than the shopping malls, for which the hotel provides free periodic shuttle service.
The room I was given was a little small but adequate for one person, had a good queen-size bed with excellent linen, a desk with connection for high-speed internet, two arm chairs with a coffee table inbetween, plenty of storage, and lovely modern fixtures: clear glassed-in tub, frosted glassed-in shower and toilet. Open sink area between. (N.B. Highly polished bathroom floor can be very slippery - also shower floor.) Vaguely African-Arabic cream and dark brown wood design scheme. Good quality basic toiletries, but nothing extra. Good small LCD TV mounted on wood swivel stand (which also contained the minibar) between foot of bed and sink area, though no pay per view or premium cable stations such as HBO. Kettle and the basic packs of coffee and tea. No free snacks or fruit. Workout room and outdoor pool. So far, OK for the price, in Dubai. The problems emerged in the early morning. First, I was awoken at 6:00 am by weekend construction noise in the building site across the road from my side of the hotel. Piercing beep beep beeps from the trucks. I put in my inadequate earplugs and tried to sleep again, but I was too warm. So I got up and tried to adjust the air conditioner down, but it didn't respond to the lower temp I entered. I was unhappy, but as I was checking out in a few hours, it didn't seem worth the bother to try move rooms and I was still tired. I told the front desk staff about problems when I left. They expressed sympathy, but offered no compensation. They did allow me to store my bags with them after check-out while I did some last minute shopping before heading for the airport. Overall, I found the staff extremely welcoming and kind- no faults there! The downside was the noisy room, poor room air conditioning, and lack of any TV channels beyond the most basic. Perhaps that explains why the rate was about half what I would have paid at a more established, better located hotel.
I had dinner in the buffet restaurant downstairs and that was good and reasonably priced. Excellent house wine and very friendly, helpful staff. I ordered room service breakfast and that was also well-prepared and the service was speedy.
I would consider staying there again at approximately that rate only when the construction was finished, though I would check the air conditioning adjustment as soon as I was shown the room! (The catch is that they are building the tallest building in the world, with adjacent mega housing-shopping complexes, so construction may be going on for some time!)
Great little hotel
Great rooms even if the open plan w/ bathroom take a while to get used to. Pool wonderful, fantastic food and genuine enthusiasm from staff all make this hotel stand out from the pack. Granted it is located away from the beach and is surrounded by quite a bit of construction. Regardless this place is a gem. Spent a week on business and its proximity to the DIFC was very useful.
We have just returned from dubai and stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. We were picked up at the airport by two smartly dressed and rather friendly staff offering cold towels and drinks once we entered the 4x4. I have to admit that there was a charge for the pick up at 100 dhs which we later realised wasnt cheap. This can be arranged cheaper at approx 70dhs or less by shopping around. The hotel was a pleasant 20 minute drive from the airport which soon passed chatting to the friendly and curteous staff. We soon discovered that all the staff take professionalism and curtesy to a new level ! From the moment we arrived at the hotel we were welcomed by Pushpa the training manager - this lady is worth her weight in gold. From hereon we were in luxurious surroundings with amazing service and facilities. We honestly felt like the hotel was more of a 5* and everything is brand new and certainly has a wow factor. There is a good size pool again with service to the max with an adjoining high tech gym. We particulary enjoyed a meal at the hotel buffet restaurant which had an incredible and extensive selection of the highest quality food which was very reasonably priced and unmissable. Breakfast was again of a 5* standard and quite honestly there was too much choice! The room was beautiful and chic modern with appliances of the highest quality. lcd tv etc. It was noted how long and thorough the cleaning staff were in the rooms and believe me these people care. As with most things in life its not perfect as its set in a developing area however you will find that in dubai wherever you go. Getting around is very easy and taxi's are cheap and obtained by the hotel staff before you even need to ask. We used the hotel limo service namely shaheed who was first class, from there we used him everytime. We would have no hesitation in going back to this hotel as we stayed a further two nights at the 5* taj palace hotel and it was not in the same league as the al manzil. We travel extensively and we have never experienced the level of friendly service and personal touches as we have here. We were sad to leave and have recommended it to all our friends and relatives since. fats & als
Unfortunately only stayed there at the end of our trip incidentally for two wonderful nights. Stayed in GH at the beginning went to Musandam, Al Ain and Fujajrah and wanted something at a reasonalble price. After searching the internet the day before arrival we thought the hotel looks nice and the price of EUR 100,- per person seemed to be ok. We booked through the phone directly the day of arrival, the hotel belongs to the southern sun group and they have two new hotels in Burj Dubai were they currently built the tallest building in the world. This whole area is an impressive construction site like the whole city is.
After staying in the Grosvenor House for almost double the price I did not expect too much from Al Manzil also because it is only 4 star rated. But I can tell you I was really thrilled when we arrived.
The hotel complex is modern Arabian style and looks also very nice from outside. Check-In was a delight and when I saw the room I was even more impressed. They have an open style bathroom which really makes it something special. I have to add that you should be aware of this because basically everything is in one room, only the toilet and the shower is separated by some kind of glass door. So if you want some privacy maybe this is not the right choice for you...
Although the hotel complex is surrounded by construction there is no noise once you are inside the hotel. We had a room overlooking the pool and the beautiful courtyard - perfect! The pool area is wonderful. Although there is some construction which seemed to be finished very soon close to the pool area it does not affect you at all. Not as bad as in GH.
The courtyard is lovely and everything is so nicely decorated.
This hotel opened only three month ago and I believe they have this special rate only a short time because they are not fully booked yet. This hotel is rated 4 star only but could be 5 star also.
All staff is very friendly although yet a little bit shy. It seems that they just do not want to make ANY mistake.
They have a business centre where they offer free internet access and the lady there is really competent and friendly.
The cafe in the entrance hall is lovely. The ladies there are incredibly nice and the cakes are really good.
My favorite place was the courtyard, it makes you feel like beeing in a different world.
For dinner they have a special offer but I think they have stopped this after we left because it does not make any sense for them!!!
They offer buffet with alcoholic drinks or without for a special price of about EUR 30 per person (including alcohol). I hate buffets but this was the best I have every seen. We opted for the dinner including alcoholic drinks and this was really a bargain for us because we like to drink wine. They do not have a wide range but really offer good wine (for example from South Africa) which we enjoyed. Again, the food was fantastic. There was a young man always standing next to you explaining everything from the buffet. If you wanted some salad he prepared it so nicely for you, brought the plates and was so attentively. It was not actually what you expect from a buffet because everything was already prepared on some nice little plates - outstanding. Better buffet (although not so wide range) than in GH. We wanted to go somewhere special on our last evening in Dubai but ended up staying in the Al Manzil again....
Al in all a very surprising experience and something which you can rarely find in Dubai for that price. I hope they sort out some of the little problems with room service knocking on your door every morning at about 9 (also on your day of leaving) and the quite poor service at the pool bar but I would definately recommend this hotel to everyone who wants 5 star quality for a good price.
I stayed in this hotel and must say I was very impressed with the whole experience. I was tagging a couple of days onto a business trip and had been staying in the Bur Dubai area. Although it is situated in the middle of a building site, I had quite an intriguing view from my room (see photos) of the massive Burj Dubai building. The room was totally unique in it's set up with an open plan style bathroom, big flat screen tv and very comfy bed. I was staying there on my own so sometimes it can be quite intimidating dining alone but I chose the Nezeaussie sports bar for dinner, the food was excellent and they even offered to prepare something different to the menu as I'm vegetarian, it's not often you get that. Equally impressed with the breakfast offering; fresh juices, soya milk for cereal, waffles, yoghurt...etc..etc. I also used the gym facilties which were good. I spend a few hours by the pool and Rohan the lifeguard couldn't really do enough, moving the umbrella for me, fresh towels, etc etc.
The hotel also offers a free shuttle bus to the beach and shopping malls so I took advantage of this and went to the Emirates Shopping Mall one day, it was massive!
I definitely recommend this hotel for the unique rooms, excellent and friendly staff, tasty food and just generally a great hotel for both business and leisure travellers alike.
5* Quality at 4* Prices
I stayed in the Al Manzil hotel before moving into my apartment in the Burj Dubai development. It wasn't really publicised in Dubai so I didn't know what to expect but I was very impressed! The rooms are on par with the superior 5* hotels in Dubai, perfect for both luxury holidays and business travel. The only problem is the surrounding development, if you are on business this will not effect you but for a holiday you may not want to be surrounded by cranes etc! The building site however is an impressive one, there are already tour busses coming inside the development to view the tallest tower in the world being built next to the equally imprssive Dubai Mall(also biggest in world). Once you are inside the Old Town/Al Manzil the construction hardly effects you. There is a delightful courtyard serving excellent food and shisha and a live band on every night outside the hotel. For me the best thing is the sports bar, it's by far the best in Dubai. It's taken a rugby theme and is a mix between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It serves beer from all of these countries and the food is 1st class!!!!!
This is definatly not a 4* hotel as it has been graded, it is certainly 5*! You will find on a holiday in Dubai you will spend most of the time Hotel hopping as all of Dubai's restaurants are inside 5* hotels, with Al Manzil you have the luxury rooms and all the facilities you need without paying the ever increasing 5* rates in Dubai!!!
Beautiful Boutique hotel over looking the burj Dubai
Beautiful new hotel... the first to open in the Old Town where the tallest building in the world is under construction. Hotel had a nice intimate boutique feel about it. Rooms were modern arabic decor with open style bathroom and great bathtub. The Sports Bar restaurant was novel serving food from Australia and New Zealand. Recommended for a shopping holiday and a business trip due to its central city location.
