Paseo Reina Cristina 7 Madrid, Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands, 91-552-6900
Got up and it was still raining. It rained all day. We visited the Plaza Mayor. Real Madrid Football stadium. Definately worth buying a 5 day tourist ticket. (15 euros each). You need to write your passport number in the boxes on the ticket. It also states to carry your documentation on it to confirm the ticket is yours, if you get stopped. You can use it on the metro or on the buses. Zone A is fine for sight-seeing within Madrid central and for getting back to the station. Well we atempted t...
Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands burtoliesA better day than yesterday. Blue sky appeared as we ate breakfast. Although it was windy and cold. About 10c. Who'd have thought we'd be wearing gloves and hats in Madrid! Sundy lunch started in the smoking area of a Cafe but then, as ever, we changed tables and were able to move to the non-smoking area. You forget what it's like to stink of cigarette smoke! Lovely meal, but can't remember the name. It was on the main road running along the bottom of the botanical Gardens.
Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands burtoliesI am writing, dear readers, on the express train between Barcelona and Madrid. Now this is a serious high speed train. The indicator display in the carriage just hit 301 kph and seems to be averaging around 280. For those more comfortable in the old imperial stuff that's over 170 mph. A beautifully smooth and silent train as well. I swear it banks on the curves. We will cover the 600 km odd in well under three hours. I take back everything I said about Spanish trains. This is superb and what'...
Madrid, Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands daviddxToday the tour started with a bus trip round some of the Madrid sights. We had an excellent local commentator with good English, an impressive knowledge of Madrid as it is now, considerable historical knowledge and the ability to during the day, gradually explain much of Spanish history in the past thousand years and the things that have shaped her people. She gave us a great deal during the day. We started with a simple drive around looking at major buildings, architectural styles and the st...
Madrid, Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands daviddxWe had the last day of the tour of Spain on the road today. We covered a lot of territory as we headed north to Madrid, both our starting and finishing point. We had all begun to have very mixed feelings about the end. We had seen so much of the rich culture of the area, had made good friends among our group and shared many good times over the 12 days. But we were looking forward to home and before that the pure mechanics of getting to our transport out - plane for all I think. We were also k...

... 8 years old. Irene is very grown up. She takes several hours of English in school everyday and is eager to talk to me, though it is difficult. She is very helpful to me and I am glad she is around to translate. I let Irene decide what kinds of food I should try. When asked what I want, I just ask, "What is your favorite?" She has not disappointed me yet. Marina, 6 years old. Marina is the family slow poke. She is very passionate about ...
Madrid, Spain sarbs... excited to see it in person. I am also excited that it's Sunday and the museum is free to the public on Sundays. I use my map to find the museum. I work my way around it trying to find the entrance, and eventually the reality of the situation dawns on me. The museum is closed. It was open (and free) until 2:30, but it's now 4:30 and closed for the day. Triple grrrr. What to do with the rest of my day, now? I'll head back over ...
Madrid, Spain tmaroochWe arrived in Madrid, a little worse for wear after you add a four hour plane flight to the Greek ferry experience. James was a lot worse for wear, needless to say. We slept for a few hours, then I decided to badger James out of bed so I could have some tapas at a nearby bar. It turned out we were pretty much in the centre of town, so we dragged ourselves down the street and found a ...
Madrid, Spain jamesalex... which train, with a little help after screwing up my first train ticket) and headed down to the historic part of town. In search of David Beckham, I wandered for a couple of hours in awe, and kicking myself that I didnt have longer there. Its absolutley gorgeous, and i really really want to go back. But alas, another boring train ride was awaiting. 7hours to Bilbao (so heres the 3cities in 22hours ...
Madrid, Spain becca_ind... to rest my legs a a few times. The dunes are incredibly steep and I made the mistake of starting off the first 40 feet or so running full speed. Your feet slip backwards with every step so it feels like you have to walk twice the distance than you actually do. It was worth the energy it to ok to reach the top. Once up there, you can't hear anything but the wind blowing, the sun had already set and it was beginning to get very dark so I decided to sit down for a minute and ...
