... time until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. The people all through Spain are amazing the way they adapt to this. They just do a bit of work in the morning (until about 1pm - 2pm) then go to the beach or swim and go out and party all night. They don't go out to dinner until 10 or 11 o'clock at night! I really struggles with this as restaurants and cafes are only setting up at 8pm or 9pm.

Goodbye blue sky

... We arrived without a single booking, so we had to scramble some to find a place. The hotel service at Chamartín station only had one hotel available, asking for €91 for a double. That being well out of our price range, I opted for a phone call to every hostel in the book. Conveniently, the first one I talked to had space, but only in the dorms. Then once we'd gotten into town and dropped off our bags there, we ended up finding cheaper ...

Madrid

Hi all, Well, just as a warning to anybody who wants to take a train in Spain, book way in advance (like a couple of days), and plan on waiting at least an hour to actually get up to the ticket booth (we thankfully learned this quickly, and only had to wait in line twice for all of our reservations). We were leaving Barcelona on the 17th and planned on taking the 11:30 train so we arrived at 10:45 to get a reservation (by the way you ...

New York and Madrid!

Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay in getting an entry up this time, the site has been down and we´ve had a busy busy week! So Miami was definately not a memorable experience as you all probably assumed from my last entry. To make it even more exciting, we had a lovely man playing with himself on the bus next to us the whole trip back to our hotel on our last night, The perfect final memory, I think! So we finally escaped Miami on the Thursday morning (Thank God ...

... and didn't honk at us as we crawled along. When we entered an impossibly narrow street Margaret got out, walked back to the van and tearfully informed its driver that we were stuck. I had a vision of our two vehicles reversing all the way back to the main road, but the van driver assured Margaret that she'd be able to fit. Miracle of miracles, she did! We eventually found our way back onto the ring road but in a breathtaking act of stupidity I somehow ...

... a chance to get my hair cut. It hasn't been cut since I hacked at it on the dock in Greece. We noticed a salon in the shopping mall near the grocery store. I went in and had my hair cut by a woman who spoke no English. I was a bit nervous, but it came out just fine - and only cost around $18. We've met several boats here who are gradually working their way to Gibraltar and the Canaries. They are planning to spend Christmas and the New Year in the Canaries and ...

... a slip and using the "Clyde Crashcup" method of docking, we tied up, just a little worse for wear. This is a large harbor with relatively cheap fees, so we're happy. We noticed another boat pull in to a slip just down from us and when Chris and I went for our little "walkabout", the gentleman on that boat called out, "Lavranos, eh?" Angelo Lavranos designed Quest, a one-off, not production-type boat. Not too many ...

Our first ´UPDATE´ from the road.

... a marked improvement over Brussels ... for a start, it was warm at 10pm. Having spent two months in London waiting for Paul, Tonya had forgotten what "warm" felt like. Found an excellent place to stay: Hostal Lopez, Calle de las Huertas, 54. Immaculately clean and just a few minutes walk from the Prado Museum and in the most happening street in Madrid. (Take your ear plugs if you want to sleep before 4am ...
