... time until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. The people all through Spain are amazing the way they adapt to this. They just do a bit of work in the morning (until about 1pm - 2pm) then go to the beach or swim and go out and party all night. They don't go out to dinner until 10 or 11 o'clock at night! I really struggles with this as restaurants and cafes are only setting up at 8pm or 9pm.
Almerimar, Spain psteerenberg... most important thing. Today started out less than ideally. The outdoors was looking fairly grey and bleak from the get-go, and not long after breakfast and a little strolling it began to rain. Predictably, we set off without an umbrella, so we had to duck under balconies, awnings and the like until retreating into a supermarket. Returning to the hotel after for a dry respite, we decided to hit local chain restaurant Museo del Jámon, gorging ourselves ...
Madrid, Spain xeriusHi all, Well, just as a warning to anybody who wants to take a train in Spain, book way in advance (like a couple of days), and plan on waiting at least an hour to actually get up to the ticket booth (we thankfully learned this quickly, and only had to wait in line twice for all of our reservations). We were leaving Barcelona on the 17th and planned on taking the 11:30 train so we arrived at 10:45 to get a reservation (by the way you ...
Madrid, Spain laura.adam... to upload pics to this site, especially when internet is limited and your paying by the second (literally). Everything is fabulous. I must say the Spanish life and culture is different than i expected which is a surprise, even having traveling here before, settling in a place is a big difference. Im living in the trendiest, hippest part of town which is extremely convenient and a lot of fun. The people are here ...
Madrid, Barrio Chueca, Spain thadandlauren... a chance to get my hair cut. It hasn't been cut since I hacked at it on the dock in Greece. We noticed a salon in the shopping mall near the grocery store. I went in and had my hair cut by a woman who spoke no English. I was a bit nervous, but it came out just fine - and only cost around $18. We've met several boats here who are gradually working their way to Gibraltar and the Canaries. They are planning to spend Christmas and the New Year in the Canaries and ...
Almerimar, Spain questmiller... a slip and using the "Clyde Crashcup" method of docking, we tied up, just a little worse for wear. This is a large harbor with relatively cheap fees, so we're happy. We noticed another boat pull in to a slip just down from us and when Chris and I went for our little "walkabout", the gentleman on that boat called out, "Lavranos, eh?" Angelo Lavranos designed Quest, a one-off, not production-type boat. Not too many ...
Almerimar, Spain questmiller... lot of buttons to push and when dared, I tend to push them willingly. So at one point I said ¨...So French people like you don´t like to speak English huh¨. She looked shocked and blurted ¨err...wee arr juhst laizee¨. When we got to the cathedral, I decided I have had enough entertainment so I told her she can go in by herself and I proceeded to excuse myself. Had our meeting been any longer, I would have thought to ask ¨So how do ...
Toledo, Spain jjwong... a marked improvement over Brussels ... for a start, it was warm at 10pm. Having spent two months in London waiting for Paul, Tonya had forgotten what "warm" felt like. Found an excellent place to stay: Hostal Lopez, Calle de las Huertas, 54. Immaculately clean and just a few minutes walk from the Prado Museum and in the most happening street in Madrid. (Take your ear plugs if you want to sleep before 4am ...
