... a bus to Valparaiso. The bus ride costed the equivalent of $0.50, took about 35-40 minutes, and the driver drove at a rapid pace. We got off at Plaza Sotomayor and spent about a couple minutes checking out the plaza. It was really cool looking, and had a pretty cool statue. After the plaza, we headed towards the oldest funicular in Valparaiso, Cerro Conception. The streets around the funicular were pretty quiet, but we were able to find the funicular eventually. We ...

We had been given a railcard by the hostel owner and having walked to the station proceeded to try and find out the cost of a journey to the next town of 'Viña del Mar'. The lady simply took the card, beeped it and said to go ahead despite having written down a figure that was four times what we were expecting. It was too late to get the bus now we thought and headed for the train, swiping the card on the barrier as we went. ...

Explosion at the Paint Factory

... During the boom years when all shipping bound for the Atlantic used Valparaiso as a stop off, an Italian entrepreneur decided to build the grandest hotel in all of South America. Then the Panama Canal was built and in one fell swoop the bottom fell out of the economy in Valpo. The hotel is still there, unfinished, and the now ancient grand-daughter of the main guy still lives in the shell of it, together with street salesmen, waiting ...
