Piracy in Ulcinj

Ulcinj is a very odd city. In the medieval years it was a haven for pirates who would capture passing ships in the Adriatic. They would steal the ships and cargo and ransom off the captives and all those that wouldn't pay up, they would sell into slavery. There still remain the prisoners cells within the fortress and the slave market in the center of town.

With today's tourisms seeking new ways to distinguish ...

The capital ...

Hallo zusammen,

Gruss
Ralf
Albanian Town in Montenegro

Hallo zusammen,

Pissed up in Podgorica (too much free beer)

... if they had maps of the city. "Da, ve haf maps. Dey are five Euro" £3.94 for a map?, in Montenegro?. Svetlana and I both knew the score. I needed a map, and Hotel Europa had what seemed like a monopoly. I forked over the money, wondering how many others before me had fallen into the same trap. I went to a café in the bus station and ordered a coke. I was given a bottle and a glass half full of water to pour it into. Customer ...

No seriously, we want to go to Albania!

I never really thought much about Albania in my 34 years. In high school, I remember learning its capital was Tirana and that it was a very strict communist state. I can point to it on a map. In the 90s, Albania was in the news regarding the Kosovo conflicts. That was the extent of my Albanian knowledge prior to my visit. In all my travel dreams over the years, Albania, oddly enough, never came to mind as a place to visit. In fact, up until a ...

... was still a serious litter problem. There were also countless buildings in a state of disrepair or initial construction. The most beautiful beach in Montenegro I was told was Ada Bojana which is very close to Ulcinj. I hopped on a minibus which took me there for 6E. Along the way we dropped people off at different beaches that all were packed and seemed very family-oriented. You had to pay to enter each one. I was let out at the entrance to Ada Bojana and went ...

Half an Albanian breakfast

... bus shelter somewhere in Northern Albania. Another thing you noitce is that almost every car in the country is a Mercedes. Some of them are even Albanian! A great deal of Italian, German and French registered cars are on the streets. At first I had felt comforted that I was not going to be the only tourist in the country. Then I noticed that the cars weren't full of hearty happy camping North Europeans as you'd expect in a Dutch car in Southern Europe at ...

... info about getting to and fro. From what I've heard, the biggest trick to Albania is figuring out the constantly fluctuating transportation network of furgons and buses, whose starting points tend to change with the phases of the moon. Having an easy start should help me get my bearings so I don't end up wandering around the suburbs looking for the right parking lot. Anyhow, it should be interesting to see. After tonight it's farewell to the Slavs for a bit.

... with famous directors like Ang le and stuff. Anway after a 2 hour bus, decided to share a place with them to get cheaper. An aussie girl called Kirsten overheard and joined. Had an expensive lunch with them in the centre of the old town. Spagethi costing 10 bucks! Then the chaos started. They wanted a room in the old town, about 2 euros more than out of the old town. I thought should be cheaper because we were all in a group. There was one place only. It had 2 rooms ...
