Herbstmesse

There is yet another fair in Basel right now, the Herbstmesse (Autumn Fair). It is huge! Carnival rides, food stalls, and booths selling trinkets are spread throughout the city. We went out at night to the Münsterplatz to see the action. Beforehand we visited Petersplatz to get raclette over potatoes and steaming Gluwein. Delicious! We also stopped in at the Barf ...

Saying good-bye

... and are less adventurous. So as we were standing by the exit waiting for them to drive past, I heard my mom shout "Laura!". I turned around and there they were, going deeper into the parking garage instead of towards the exit. We all laughed and I joked about how it's already begun.

Finally they drove past us out the exit and we waved goodbye. I felt a bit sad the rest of the day. It was such a great visit with my parents and a wonderful road trip through Austria!

... course drinking stations and small tented dance "clubs".

Most of the way you didn't really have to walk as you got pulled along in the current of bodies. We eventually got to the square next to the church where there was a little more room to maneuver and delicious food to sample. We checked out all the little African shops and stopped to watch cooking displays and mini dance routines.

The Black Forest

This was what I really came to Europe for. Freiburg was just the beginning of an awesome adventure for me. The mountains and the forest and the cake. We caught a cable car up to the top of the mountain and wandered in the snow. Got some great photos. We made Freiburg our base and toured a fair bit around the region. Spent a night here and there and came back to Freiburg for the festival. Took about two hundred photos in two hours one day; they had a ...

We took a 4 hour train that started at the southern tip of switerland and ended at Basel on the northern tip with germany and france closely bordering. It was a long day. We got off the train and it was pure mayhem. I finally have gotten a real live taste of what european soccer is all about. Ive never seen so many drunk fans in my life and the game wasnt for another 5 hours. The entire city is ...

Doctor Lingo - article to supplement last entry!

... this be? It sounds contagious, maybe even fatal. Is it time to phone friends and family and say farewell? Is your will up to date? Relax. Plumbum oscillans is no threat to health. It is Latin for "swinging the lead", and it is the doctor's discreet way of concluding you're a malingerer, seeking a note to take time off work. These and other terms are part of a secret language that doctors use with one another to convey a truth that ...
