into the tunnels.
Onwards and upwards we head and it simply seems that this mountain railway
is just never-ending. Just when one thinks we have reached the top of the
mountain its into another tunnel and out it comes hugging the edge of yet
another mighty high mountain.
Along the way there are a few passing loops and we pass two other steam
hauled trains which are descending the pass.
We are soon about 2000m above sea level ...
... nut and seed bars. There were two more climbs before the final descent into Bormio and I managed to improve my mood and get over them with some oomph. It feels good at the end of the day to whizz downhill homeward bound and see those signs for each successive kilometer go by so quickly. We got home too late for the Terme but with plenty of time to shop at the market for dinner. It was a simple repast-gnocchi I think with lots of cheese-but it was nice to cook in our place.
... by a hot chocolate (as you may have noted we are liking the whole hot chocolate thing in Switzerland!), it was a delicious finish to the evening, with the melodious Edelweiss playing in the background. We both agreed it had been a good night and we enjoyed the walk home in the brisk evening air, seeing the illuminations of the city landmarks. There were two things left to do tonight. ... free for a while after this trip, I really am sick to death of it. Anyway, I had muesli that we had brought with us and an egg, yoghurt etc. and two coffees before heading out. Firstly we caught the ferry to where the cog train left off, then the cog train up this enormous mountain. Up early and off we go. First a bus trip to the monorail, next monorail to Piazalle Roma. Then drag suitcases up and over what must be the biggest bridge in Venice to Santa Lucia train station.
