... hibachi. The meat was really nice and the cooking fun.

After lunch we walked around some more and I purchased my first major souvenir - a set of very good quality chopsticks. The store even engraved my name on them in Kanji.

I ended my day in Takayama with a green tea ice cream. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't rush out to buy another one.

A lone cyclist was grinding up the constant climb, in Lycra on a road bike nearing the 8% next 10k sign, at 20 degrees C, very tough guy. All watercourses have weirs for hydro power and at the top end the usual Snowy Hydro type tunnels and pipelines. Shinhotaka Ropeway is a two stage gondola ride to the top with the second gondola a double decker (only one in Japan). Passengers love ...

... are on display. Each float weighs tons, is incredibly elaborate, stands 8 metres tall, are made with pure gold, are national treasures and are maintained by the federal government. The floats are 300 years old and a partial restoration of one of them cost $2.5M in the 1930's. 300,000 people show up to these festivals (Takayama has 90,000 citizens). Past the temple are a few shrines including one for school children who leave ...
