    METEORA, GREECE OCTOBER 10, 2014

Today we came into the port of Volos, the third largest port in Greece. This is the take-off point for a day-long trip to Meteora. This has been a life-long dream of Dennis to see Meteora, so he is quite excited this morning. We know it will be a good excursion for our guide is Michael. It is a two hour bus ride to meteora, so Michael fills us with information about the monasteries that we ...

... where wool and wood carvings are popular. I could have definitely spent more time there (and eaten more food…), but around 2 we left for Meteora. In Meteora we visited the Grand Meteron Monastery. On top of the suspending rocks in Meteora there are six remaining monasteries that are sitting on top of these massive mountains. It was stunning. As for now, apparently ...

Off the ferry and drove to a ruin at Dodoni. Met an English guy there who told us a about Vikos gorge near Ionia that we shouldn't miss.

Drove up to the gorge past all the old pack horse stone bridges in Zagoria - to the top of the gorge and up the mountain behind it ... very spectacular scenery. Particularly nice parked up the top in the middle of a thnderstorm.

... into a Greek Orthodox Church. I really enjoyed seeing the original paintings and carvings in the sanctuary. The tradition of receiving unsolicited free food continued when the old ladies of the church came and gave us cookies and chocolates as we were leaving. They're friendly in Greece!

The next morning brought quite a bit of rain that continued throughout the day, but that almost made it better for visiting ...
