Barcelona - Day 1

... but well worth the view. We rode it around and got off a few times. By early evening, we decided to find a place to eat some dinner. Unfortunately, it was less than memorable. But, it was food. We made our way back to the bus and got back on. We went to see the Arc de Triomf. It's smaller than the one in Paris, but it was nice. It was the main entrance to the 1888 World Exhibition. We walked from the Arc to the Sagrada ...

Now Im in Marrakech, and if I thought Barcelona was a sensory city, this place provides a full frontal assault on the senses ) as I type I can hear the call to prayer accompanied by techno drumbeats, the smell of spices but also of hot chips, feel my legs sticking to the chair in 42 degree heat, and I only have to look out the window at the sqauare dusty building and know that Im a very long way from home...But more on that later!

... The piece de resistance was definitely the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's neo-Gothic church and his ode to God. It is truly a remarkable building, and when completed, we think it will have to be the most amazing building on earth (although at the current rate of progress that leaves a lot of time for new entries). What really seperates this building from any other is Gaudi's ingenius incorporation of organic themes like massive pillars created off of tree trunk designs and ...

HOLA FROM SPAIN

... it starts to rain we jump off and head to the Picasso Museum. This shows Pablos work from the begining as an apprentice all the way through his years and influences. How it changes and finally into cubism. I really enjoyed this and Paul got something out of it too which surprised us both. I loved seeing how he grew as an artist and found the blue era probly spoke to me the most. Paul wants to go to the Aquarium and see the sharks. They have a ...

... could try playing a lot of different instruments. The whole museum was very hands-on and also had an Amazon rainforest. On our way back to the city center, we stopped for lunch (we decided that we would have one real meal and since we were so exhausted from walking so much we would have a long, relaxing meal) at a French crepe restaurant owned by a couple from Brittany. I had a delicious soup (de la dia), which was made of some interesting ...

Gaudi, Nouvel, Calatrava, and Mies all in one day

... into the space, just the thought of all the stain glass was AMAZING. Jean Nouvel's building was an interesting one! You could see it from all over the city. Barcelona's Business Reps asked Nouvel to design the main building to front the new business district. Nouvel excepted the commission and decided that the building would be in the shape of a, I'm sorry to say it, penis. He felt the building would best represent the predominately masculine business scene if it were in the ...

... before I was kicked out of my seat and placed next to a girl who lives in Brookline, Massachusetts. This is a town about 10 minutes from Babson College. She goes to school at Bates in Maine and is on the crew team there. We knew a bunch of the same people through little connections, which is always fun. She is studying abroad in Grenoble, France and was really interesting to talk to. She is fluent in French, which I am jealous of and is even taking all of her ...

The Adventure Begins

"This is bizarre," were the only words my sister could say as she stepped off of the plane in Germany. Without anytime to prepare ourselves, my whole family arrived this morning in Frankfurt in order to catch a connecting flight to Germany. I just can't believe we're actually doing this and I haven't even had a second in the past weeks to mentally prepare myself for the twelve days ahead. I usually go through my Lonely Planet and 1000 Places To See Before You Die ...

first day's sightseeing and impressions

... Rambla can be considered as a kaleidoscope of the city's life. The aura of Rambla was positive. You could understand from the first minute that it was the meeting place for tourists. Shops all along the Rambla, the famous Canaletes fountain at the beginning of the street which preserved the rumor that whoever drunk from its water would definitely return to Barcelona, and the part of the street full of stalls with flowers, could verify it.

... speaks little English. Once I got settled it was almost 3:00, and I hadn't even eaten yet. I get a little grumpy when I'm hungry, but I let that pass and went to bed. Today, I slept in and still felt a bit ******. I went out and had some food, then walked around a bit, but I don't feel much better. I don't know if it's the uncertainty of my traveling style, or the precarious money situation, or the occasional ...
