Last night, we made it to Panajachel in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Panajachel is on Lake Atitlan, which is a lake in the mountains and is surrounded by many different villages. Panajachel was interesting. It was a mix between the native Guatemalans and Mayan people and quite a few Americans who came down to visit and...
Last night was our first night in san marcos and as Leighann mentioned, it was a great hotel. We will post pictures as soon as we can. We walked around the town which was pretty small and we passed many hippies. The town is really chill and laid-back and they seem like they dont have a worry in the world (except for the internet cafe owner and some our neighbor at the hotel - they both have tudes for some reason). After 30 minutes of exploring we probably stumbled across 5 massage parlors, re...

Panajachel, Western Highlands, Guatemala xjassxWe started off today by doing 'Cables X-Tremos' – a series of 8 zipwires across a gorge next to the lake. Everytime we crossed the gorge we got an awesome view of the lake on one side and a huge waterfall on the other!!! Basically it was ‘Go Ape’ but cheaper and with a much better view!!! (although less of the exciting bridges of Go Ape). To get to the start we had to trek up the gorge – this was when we started to doubt our volcano climbing ...

... Walking back onto the ship for the final time, knowing that I am finished with my junior year of college and that I would be back home in a week's time... this time for good until after graduation... was a really interesting but great feeling. I miss home. It will be nice to be back. Guatemala was amazing. I knew it would be. I am glad to have spent my last port with a good friend too. Now, on to the Panama Canal, the "Ambassador's Ball," the Caribbean... and finally... Florida!
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala cali... indicators such as literacy and infant mortality in Latin America. Yet the Guatemalan people somehow maintain a healthy sense of humour and a positive outlook!!! Antigua seems to be an easy place to stay, with the possibility of travel on weekends and Spanish lessons during the week. My volunteer opportunities are plentiful, but still undecided. Photos to follow soon once I figure out how to download them.

Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala aventura... trip. The plan is to go to Guatemala City and, of all things, go to a morgue. As far as I know, we'll be learning about exhumations and forensic anthropology that's helping to piece together and validate the horrific history of the early 1980s. Besides that, I think we might be visiting the city dump, where many, many people live and make their livelihoods collecting recyclables and whatever else they can sell (informal economy? Mhm). Next week is our first big trip as a ...
