    ... Turkish in origin.

    A young fellow guided. He had more English than I realized. His family effectively was our hosts for the day in many respects.

    Stone towers still exist here, a defence structure from olden days. We walked up to a park to see a couple of trees [which I did not get]. Crossing a bridge, most went for a loo break as we entered the Turkish part of town. It wasn't a particularly exciting start. It is hot.

    ... century. We went back to the bazaar for a late coffee break, then on to the Stone Bridge crossing the Vardar River built by the Ottomans in the 15th century. In this area are many new government buildings and statues honoring key figures in the long history of the region. Before going to dinner our guide treated us to tea in a nearby tea shop.     ... They called me a cab, which took me to the hostel a bajillion miles away (or so it seemed). The taxi driver tried to be helpful, though, and explained that Vodno, which is the mountain's name, means "water" and that the mountain got its name for the stream running down it. Things looked up after I checked in. The dorm is clean and free water, coffee and tea are offered. The place seems safe and David at reception was helpful to point me to the key ...

    I spent only one night in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The time constrains in my trip demanded me to rush my way east to Istanbul, so I couldn't spare more time in Skopje. I reached by means of hitchhiking (autostop as it is known in Europe) - a very polite and gentle old man from Ferizaj, Kosovo, brought me to the outskirts of Skopje and then I caught a taxi to find the hostel where I would stay.
