Water, water everywhere

... Silly Emily for once drove us right up to the entrance to the aire, which is also by a river under trees so it is very wet everywhere. However, for 5 euros per night we have a level gravelly spot with electricity so may have the heating on shortly. We are not planning on going out tonight and will just have to see what tomorrow brings.

... for our our trip and not hotel rooms as the apartments had lots of room and cooking facilities.

The next day we travelled to a small area of the Loire Valley called St Nicholas Bourgieul. We stayed at a B and B on a farm amongst the grape vines (Cabernet Franc which were being harvested). We had booked to go riding for the afternoon but unfortunately it was pouring with rain and quite cold. We gave the riding a miss and settled into the communal kitchen area ...

... and got directions from two chaps - at the same time - all in French. However, the arm waving did help somewhat and eventually, we found a sign which more or less pointed us in the right direction. Oh boy, were we glad we were not towing our caravan!! This Aire is just beautiful. Right on the side of the river, a very nice little town just over the bridge with a supermarket, patisserie and butcher. ...

... br> To celebrate we went to the Latin Quarter and had a beer, followed by dinner across the street at Cafe Buci (the Cafe that introduced me to my love of duck). Had the Croque Madam, a nice change from her brother sandwich. We then went for a stroll through St. Germaine, my favourite part of Paris, the part that looks like the Paris from the movies. By accident we ran into a large macaroon bakery. Lucky for us. Macaroons another food ...

... the service made the hairs on my arms stand up. Wednesday 6th August Today we set off on a 2 day trip to do several war memorials and historical sights of the war. We drove to Pont du hoc which is significant to d-day landings, Omaha beach and went to the American cemetery. The cemetery visit was quite moving to see the rows and rows of crosses in the ground for the American soldiers that were killed here in France ...
