We finally made it to Bled from Bratislava after taking a taxi, 3 trains, and 2 buses- all in all, 7 hour day of travel. We got set up by a friend of Chris' that knew some of the locals from a previous trip and our apartment was awesome! We dropped our things off and headed straight down to the lake. Here are some of the things we did during our stay: • Chris took me out on a rowboat to the island ...

Another glorious day weather wise, a high of 28c predicted and the morning sun augurs well. We set off early to walk along the lakeside whilst it is still fairly cool and reach the far end of the lake after a steady 30 minutes. Our first full day, so after an OK buffet breakfast we walk the 3 minutes along the promenade to where the tourist bus to Vintgar Gorge and Bled Castle leaves. The bus runs once a day at 10am getting to the gorge at 10.30 where it waits and returns at 12.30. It costs €2.30 to the gorge or €1.80 to the castle. Today we are heading to the Gorge and it is wonderful! Firstly the bus goes halfway round ...

... picturesque. Turquoise water surrounded by pine trees, with an island at one end with a small church, a castle on a bluff at the other end with another church with a spire. All ringed by Alps some of which still have remnants of snow. It really is a picture postcard, and the hotel has some stunning viewpoints, including from the 5th floor swimming pool, if only I had remembered our togs! After unpacking we cross the road to the lakeside ...

... didn't really fancy one but about a third of the way around the lake, I came across a cafe and succumbed to temptation. I will write no more about it, so you'll just have to look at the photo and imagine.

  • I am so pleased that Maya/Maia?? the NZ woman I met in Zagreb persuaded me to make this detour. If you're reading this, Maya - thanks again for the maps you left one my bunk, and please get in touch on Facebook! ...
