We woke up in the fog in Passau. Actually, in more ways than one as we had to use the alarm to get us up at 7 am. At 8:30 we took a walking tour of the city. We started in the fog but it gradually burned off and it turned into beautiful sunny day. We attribute this to bringing our heavy raincoats and deciding not to bring sunscreen. Passau was governed by prince-bishops until 1806, so we saw the bishop's ...

... it. If we had been standing we would have been knocked over. After that the bridges were even lower and they closed the top deck. To get under some of the bridges, they fill ballast tanks on the ship to make it lower in the water. It's the same principle used when submarines dive. We took about a two hour walking tour of Passau which is at the confluence of ...

    ... enormous sanctuary.
After a lunch concentrated on the local specialities (brats, spicy mustard, pretzels, sauerkraut and beer) we hiked up to Vesta Oberhaus, the large fortress that overlooksthe city. Built originally in 1219, and substantially expanded in the 15th century, it was the residence of many of the "prince bishops" of the town (so named because they simultaneously held a senior rank in the government and in ...
