... and radio that came on every hour (and was somehow wired into the house an couldn't be turned off). So every hour, next doors clock rang its bells and the radio came on and the lights started flashing. Lucky I am not epileptic - but needless to say I didn't sleep as well as I might have, but the couch was surprisingly comfortable.
Another busy day tomorrow - possibly visiting the Lindt factory which is located in Aachen. Now that is something to look forward to .
At last we got the chance to spend more than a couple of days in Maastricht! My cousin Annelies and her husband Jules live there and it's a wonderful city full of history and culture. We really enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts and Jen and Matt were able to visit for my birthday. Sharan and Peter Burrow were only an hour away in Brussels so we got to spend a weekend with them as well as cousins Kees and Ans who live in the rural town of Berlicum and Sanne and Dan in Zierikzee ...

... castle in the region. It has beautiful Baroque style gardens over 4 levels. It is also where the agreement was signed for the European Union, altogether a good experience. After lunch we were bussed back to our ship which was now docked at Koln(Cologne), we were given the option of a 1 hr walking tour but as it was raining & quite cold & the four of us were already coughing & spluttering, we decided to call it a day.
We will have to come back another time.
We left Bergues around 10am on a beautiful morning heading towards Brussels. As it was the May Day BH the roads were very quiet and all the shops shut.
