Fast boat back, ferry home and we enter our warm apartment at approx 7pm, in time to cook dinner.

After a few days by the sea it was time to head North toward Lago Maggiore and the Swiss border. I had stayed at Lake Maggiore when I was a kid and it was something I remembered as a quiet and beautiful place. Of course things change but I wanted to see if I could make it up there and stay the night.

I found a small roadside café on a hill overlooking the lake. The expresso was good! I sat there for a while soaking up the sun, but I knew I had a lot of driving to do if I was going to make it to Pisa before dark. Still without a GPS but I had written names of cities and road numbers on a piece of paper as a reference.
We left our hotel in Nice at about 8.30 in overcast rainy weather and caught a cab to the station. Our train wasn't due to leave until about 9.30 but we weren't taking any chances. We had bought our tickets yesterday on our way to Monaco so at least we didn't have to worry about that (not that anyone checks tickets anyway...).
