... do in my opinion. A manageable modern city full of awesome sights and rich with all the well preserved temples, parks and zen gardens you could want. My favourites were the Golden Pavilion, Tenryu zen gardens, the spooky Arashiyama bamboo grove, the Big Buddha (in nearby Nara, like Kyoto also a former capital) and the Kurama onsen up in the mountain valleys north of Kyoto. Easy and cheap to get around by bus and train too!

... you're never more than 100m from a vending machine, so getting a drink is no problem. Sometimes you can stand in one spot and see three different vending options, always so far with whatever I've wanted in stock and cold. Though they do lie about the lemons, if you check the photos below. The railway system in Japan is quite intimidating but we managed to catch the right train to Yokohama and then change for Nihono Dori station and a short walk to the pier for our cruise ship.
