    ... There are 2 options, one is a place where you can ride elephants and the other is the elephant orphanage where you go to see them bathe and be fed etc. We decided on going to the one where you can ride on the elephant, as Pete hadn't been on one before. In hindsight, I wish we had not bothered with that and had gone to the orphanage instead, as you only got to ride for maybe 10 minutes and it wasn't really in the forest it was more on a path so not like my experience ...

    ... blacksmith at his anvil,a family brick works,small saw mills cutting the coconut trees into 4x2 planks and fruit sellers(pineapple,coconut and bananas). The women tended to be wearing dresses and blouses and the gents sarongs,saris are apparently worn in Kandy,the capital.Many of the children were wearing their white Sunday school uniforms.We stopped to drink and eat a king coconut and a coconut roti.Eventually in the mid afternoon we arrived at our hotel which is a lakeside resort ...

I visited many of the places mentioned in the book and found the intricate facts and information helped to paint a rich picture of the teardrop shaped island. I felt the writing style was quite stunted in places, with chapters suddenly ending without adequate reflection or conclusion but overall this book provides a treasure trove of knowledge about this special island.
