Fri. June 12. Day 8 Warm to hot. 30C Breakfasted, packed and tidied the Zagreb apartment before saying goodbye to the owner and getting a taxi to the airport to pick up our hire car for the 140km drive to Ljubljana. Our vehicle is a Skoda station wagon, only 3 weeks old. After a few teething problems our trip director, Loretta Ljubljana (GPS), took charge and got us on the road. Allowed to do 130km/hr on the highway got us quickly to the Slovenian border, where ...

I broke my fingernail to the quick today. And if that's the worst thing that happened in a day, it must have been a pretty excellent day.

We woke up in the funky Yellow Room in Zagreb after a restless night as the hostel is right beside some night clubs and a taxi rank, so there was a lot of shouting and engine noise through the night as it was too warm to shut the window. The first was a dried pear dumpling (kvočevi nudlni) with a sweet raisin and walnut sauce, and the second was a spring roll type shell but it had cheese and pine nuts inside, and sesame sauce and hot sauce on top- that was especially amazing. The receptionist at the hostel recommended going on a free walking tour which was really well done - it didn't go far but in 2.5hours we saw a lot of the old town and heard about Ljubljana ...

... on the door tells us it should be open. Ah well maybe next time. We decide to catch the Funicular Railway up to the Castle that sits on a hill in the centre of town. This saves us walking up the steep path. From the Castle Terrace we have terrific views of the town and surrounding country. Back down into town and we wander around the old area poking our nose into several shops and people watching as we wander along. For dinner tonight we went to ...

... brewing scene from a bartender at Sir William's pub.

The traditional food was pretty good, being meat heavy and a mix between German and Hungarian (stews/goulashes). There was also a lot of Italian, which wasn't surprising because of its proximity and the amount of tourists who cannot seem to ever get enough pasta or pizza. I skipped the Italian and had (at varying times) veal, venison and ...
