A late introduction to Bolivia

A travel blog entry by coco89 on Jul 10, 2014

Funnily enough our last day in La Paz was the day we decided to do the Red Cap Free Walking Tour that had been recommended by numerous travellers as a great way to get to know the city and Bolivia in general. As we learned "un monton" as they say in Spanish I thought why not share some of the curiosities we were taught. San Pedro Prison: San Pedro Prison is an infamous prison in La Paz that nowadays holds 2500 inmates and 15 guards - yes 15 this is not a typo. ...

... the Salar de Uyuni (see related post). It was touch-and-go for a while whether I would go with Casey and Laura, but eventually was feeling mostly recovered so off we went.

On our return to La Paz, we went to see the 'Cholita's Wrestling' - a wrestling event in El Alto involving the thickset indigenous women engaged in professional wrestling, something that they are very proud of as it is the only thing that puts them on a level pegging with the men. What followed was one of ...

It very quickly became apparent that we were also going to buy some soft shell jackets for the inca trail. Everything was pretty cheap, ...

Our flight to la Paz from São Paulo took around 10 hours, this included a 6 hour stop over in Santa Cruz. We didn't time this flight too well as the England v Uruguay game was on but fortunately we were able to watch it in an Internet cafe at the airport... I won't say too much about the game as you know the score, but it was a depressing connecting flight to la Paz, typical England! Once we landed we hopped into a taxi to our hostel. La Paz is around ...

The tragedy of Huayna Potosi

... hike or more accurately 2 hour climb was painfully difficult. In my head I could hear my sister's voice saying "it hurts my legs and I can't breathe, what is there to possibly like about hiking?!" And I couldn't help but slightly agree with her during this 2 hour effort whilst simultaneously mumbling words of encouragement to my furiously thumping heart.

An early night in preparation for a night climb to the top starting at 12.30am and I found myself in a ...
