... Abuela, Mario and I basically climbed a mountain to go to Mass at a Carthusian Monk Residency: Cartuja de Miraflores. There is only one mass a week for visitors and it is in the back of the beautiful church, where the monk chorus sits. Thus said, there are only 16 seats in the whole place, so basically everyone stands. It was a very reverent and serious Catholic mass with some differences as well. ... earlier we had a drink at the bar whilst waiting for the hotel to open. In his book, John Brierley says that Castrojeriz seems to be on a permanent siesta...well I have to agree with him! A small Christmas market was also going on at this time and was open even at 11pm after we finished dinner (spanish time) so we wandered through the stalls and picked up some hot wine to guard against the chill of the city in winter. With low temperatures and holiday season lights strung up throughout the city it felt like an appropriate trip to get us into the Christmas spirit.

If sleep deprevation is torture then albergues are systematic torture chambers in disguise! Every afternoon the impression of restful abode; every night a broken promise. Not to be ageist or sexist but, according to my observations large, older ladies are the main offenders. They are in no way the only culprits; late to bed party people; 'one too many' wine quoffers given to comatosed fits of snoring; clumsy backpack organisers "quietly" making more ...

... Fancy meeting the two people in the whole of Europe in one day that don´t speak a word of english. That must be some record I think. As we head towards Leon I am mindful of Clare´s pending appearance in Europe. I will run out of time to do every stage and am unsure of the bus network. I need to work this out. Will stay in a hotel in Leon. Cannot afford another day off but a hotel for the night appeals at this stage. Regards from Northern Non-English Spain ...
