          Well here we are in Portugal, at Coimbra, which used to be the old capitol. It took a five hour trip from Salamanca in an air conditioned mini-van to get here, arriving about 3.00pm. We travelled on a very good highway through countryside that seems much more green than Spain and alongside a very big river - the Mondego.

          Today we visited some fabulous Roman ruins at Conimbriga with great mosaics. Then it was off to a monument under UNESCO World Heritage protection, the Abbey of the Gothic Manueline "Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Vitoria" in Batalha. We finished the day with a visit to Fatima, the Catholic pilgrimage village where Our Lady appeared to 3 shepherd children in 1917. It was awful! Huge with ghastly tacky souvenir shops.           ... shories were as big as the waves out the back. We have some fun mucking around on the sand, taking photos, being 'little kids’ and doing hand stands, etc. It was kind of nice to muck around and have some fun regardless of our miserable weather recently.
