Today was a pack up and quiet day. There was a monster thunder storm overnight and the rain was steady until mid-late morning. We decided to try and see what Raffa was like, it looked interesting from the road that we have frequently used on our way south around the lake. When we got there, we drove straight through, there was a lovely church but apart from that - nothing else....not even a gelataria!! So we headed to Salo instead and parked at ...
... at the Citadella carpark which was a five minute walk from the Arena. Of course before we did anything else we had to get gelati and found an artisan gelataria called Pretto on the corner of the main circus as you approach the arena. We went to the ticket office and were able to buy tickets for Carmen on the stone steps at the back and we had packed our cushions from the outdoor furniture at the villa into a backpack to protect our backsides!! ...
After a healthy breakfast we decided to head up the west coast of the lake towards Riva. We were only going to go as far as Gargnano but when we arrived we couldn't find parking so we continued on the road and ended up in Limone. The road cut through the mountains and there were plenty of long tunnels on the road to Limone - the scenery was amazing but the weather was hampering us a bit. ... of this world. The finale was a freshly cooked apple pie and two semi-freddo, one apricot and one strawberry - and we shared them all. Both boys said it was the best pasta and pork they had ever eaten. I drove home down the mountain, it was still raining, and because there was no icecream - we stopped at Gardone Riveria for one for the boys. Hamish was disappointed as they had run out of chocolate and tiramisu so had to settle for a white chocolate instead....definitely a first world ...
